3M laminator recall overview:

  • Who: 3M is recalling more than 500,000 Scotch thermal laminators.
  • Why: The laminator can overheat, posing a fire hazard.
  • Where: The 3M laminator recall is active in the U.S. and Canada.

3M is recalling more than 500,000 Scotch thermal laminators as a safety feature on them can malfunction during overheating, posing a fire hazard.

The recall was posted on Dec. 8 to the Consumer Product Safety Commission website. It applies to 516,500 Scotch TL1302 Thermal Laminators sold in the United States, and about 3,560 of the laminators sold in Canada.

The recall comes after 3M received nine reports of the laminators catching on fire, including three reports of minor property damage.

No injuries have been reported so far, the recall says. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Scotch laminators can be returned for a refund, recall says

Consumers should immediately unplug and stop using the recalled laminators and contact 3M for a full refund and instructions on how to properly dispose of the laminator, the recall states.

Consumers will be directed to fill out an online recall registration form. 3M will then email the consumer directly to request additional information and inform consumers of how to properly dispose of the laminator.

The affected laminators were sold at Walmart, Staples, Costco and other stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com, Amazon.com and Staples.com from April 2014 through Oct. 2022 for between $35 and $90.

Meanwhile, 3M is also facing litigation over its Dual-Ended Combat Arms Earplugs. If you or a loved one suffered partial or total hearing loss and/or tinnitus after being issued 3M Combat Arms Earplugs between 2003 and 2015 in the U.S. military, you may be entitled to compensation.
