More than 14,000 late model Ram pickup trucks are subject to a recall concerning faulty backup cameras.

The recall is limited to 2021 Ram 1500 pickup trucks with trailer reverse steering that were manufactured between June 2020 and April 2021. The backup cameras in the recalled trucks can fail, increasing the risk of crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The vehicle safety defect is caused by a problem with the trailer reverse steering module, says Consumer Reports. If the backup camera fails, drivers will not be able to see an image. In addition, the warning light for the Ram pickup truck’s electronic throttle control may turn on.

Owners can take their recalled Ram pickup trucks to a dealership for a free software update that the automaker says will fix the problem. Consumers with questions can call Ram at 800-853-1403.

The Ram recall is relatively minor compared to a similar recall issued for faulty backup cameras issued by Ford several months ago. In October 2020, Ford was forced to recall more than 700,000 vehicles for a problem caused by a malfunctioning circuit board in the camera.

Top Class Action Lawsuits will continue to report on this and other vehicle safety recalls to help keep consumers informed.

Indeed, more than 880 recalls concerning safety issues affecting 55 million vehicles were reported in 2020 alone. Owners and lessees are encouraged to be aware of any recalls affecting their vehicle to avoid serious safety issues, including spontaneous fires, faulty airbags, and other problems.

Consumers can check to see if their vehicle has been recalled on the NHTSA website.

  1. James Richard Pursley says:

Really tired of backing out of my driveway and once out of every 30 times I get this abrupt stop for absolutely no reason. Today it really has caused me serious neck issues. In essence a whiplash that has not gone away after 3 hours. I am upset. It is a 2020 ram laramie. Not sure if this can be fixed but am going to call on Monday.
