Two companies that make hand sanitizers, Global Sanitizer and Dibar Nutricional, have issued recalls on products due to a potentially dangerous methanol contamination.
On May 11, Mexico based company Dibar Nutricional S. de R.L. De C.V. (“Dibar”) announced a voluntary recall of 27 lots of DIBAR Labs Hand Sanitizer for consumers packaged in 8oz (8-53090-00301-3 UPC) and 16 oz (8-53090-00302-0 UPC) fluid ounce bottles, according to the U.S. Drug & Food Administration (FDA) recall notice. Dibar is also voluntarily recalling 2 lots of ProtectoRx Hand Sanitizer packaged in 2oz (Lot Number LDHSN050720) and 16oz (Lot Number LDHSN050820) fluid ounce bottles.
The Dibar products are being recalled after testing conducted by the firm revealed the presence of methanol.
On May 12, Las Vegas based Global Sanitizer announced a voluntary recall of 50 thousand units of Medically Minded hand sanitizers for consumers with lot numbers E212020 & E082020 and Best Buy dates of 5/21/2022, according to the FDA notice.
The Global Sanitizer products are being recalled after FDA analysis discovered the product contained methanol.
Exposure to methanol in significant doses can lead to some serious conditions including, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death, according to the FDA.
Young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are considered the most at-risk group, according to the FDA. No one should ingest hand sanitizer of any kind, according to the FDA, because all varieties of the product are toxic but methanol can be particularly harmful.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020 the FDA has issued numerous recalls on products because of methanol contamination. In the rush to release hand sanitizers and take advantage of a booming marketplace, many companies released hand sanitizers containing methanol, a wood alcohol. It’s not clear that the methanol began appearing for nefarious reasons, and many of the companies, like Essar Inc., voluntarily recalled their products, according to TechSpray, which has a nice look at the chemistry behind the hand sanitizers.
Individuals who purchased either hand sanitizers are advised to not open the packaging or use the product, and either discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase.
Neither Global Sanitizer or Dibar have received reports of any injuries or side effects from the recalled products.
If you believe you have been adversely affected by the product, seek medical attention immediately. You can also notify the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program via an online form, phone or fax.
Consumers who have further questions about the recall can contact Global Sanitizer at 702-323-4402 Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm, Pacific Standard Time, or via email.
Consumers can contact the commercial offices of Dibar Nutricional S. de R.L. De C.V. at +52 443-314-5369 Monday through Friday 9am to 6pm, Eastern Standard Time, or via email.
