Bic razors class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Plaintiffs Casina Butler and Benson Pai filed a class action lawsuit against Bic USA Inc.
  • Why: The lawsuit claims Bic failed to disclose its razors contain “forever chemicals” that may pose health risks.
  • Where: The Bic class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

Bic razors contain synthetic chemicals that potentially pose health risks, a class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiffs Casina Butler and Benson Pai claim Bic USA Inc. fails to disclose its razors contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are often called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment and tend to accumulate over time.

PFAS are linked to various cancers, liver damage and immunotoxicity effect, the class action lawsuit claims.

Consumers are increasingly aware of the dangers of PFAS accumulating in their bodies, and many choose to purchase products free of certain toxic chemicals, the Bic class action lawsuit alleges. The plaintiffs point to a study showing the majority of shoppers are willing to pay a premium for healthier and safer products.

Bic class action highlights state, federal efforts against PFAS

In April 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)  announced the first-ever national legally enforceable drinking water standard for PFAS, according to the Bic class action lawsuit. It also designated two types of PFAS as hazardous substances under federal law.

State legislatures are also taking action to protect consumers from PFAS risks, the lawsuit says. Ten states banned the intentional use of PFAS in food packaging, and Maine recently enacted a law prohibiting the sale of any product with intentionally added PFAS, effective Jan. 1, 2030.

Before the Maine PFAS law takes effect, the state will require companies to disclose whether their products contain intentionally added PFAS, the Bic class action lawsuit explains. Bic is reportedly one of the companies to self-report its products contain intentionally added PFAS.

“No reasonable consumer would expect that shaving razors would contain dangerous PFAS, which are indisputably linked to harmful health effects in humans,” the PFAS razors class action states.

Butler and Pai filed the Bic class action lawsuit on behalf of a proposed class of consumers in the United States who purchased Bic razors containing PFAS. They also seek to represent a California subclass.

The Bic PFAS razors class action lawsuit asserts claims for violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law, False Advertising Law, Consumer Legal Remedies Act, fraud, negligent failure to warn and unjust enrichment.
