Subway Tuna Class Action Lawsuit Overview:
- Who: Karen Dhanowa and Nilima Amin filed a revised class action lawsuit against Subway.
- Why: Dhanowa and Amin claim lab testing proves Subway tuna contains other animal species DNA, including chicken, pork, and cattle.
- Where: The class action lawsuit is pending in California federal court.
Subway tuna contains trace amounts of chicken, pork, and cattle DNA, a revised class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiffs Karen Dhanowa and Nilima Amin claim they tested Subway’s tuna in a lab, and that, out of 20 samples, 19 contained no detectable tuna DNA in a revised complaint submitted this week.
The class action lawsuit was previously dismissed in October after a judge determined consumers did not show they only bought the sandwiches due to Subway advertising about tuna. However, the plaintiffs were given the option to submit an amended complaint.

Indeed, Dhanowa and Amin now allege, meanwhile, that all 20 of the samples contained chicken DNA, while 11 had pork DNA and seven had cattle DNA.
“Defendants have no reasonable basis for labeling, advertising, and marketing the Tuna Products as being tuna or containing 100% tuna,” states the plaintiffs’ newly revised complaint.
The Subway tuna samples were tested by the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, according to the class action lawsuit.
Amin claims she ordered and consumed more than 100 tuna sandwiches from Subway between 2013 and 2019, reasonably believing it contained no other fish or animal species, according to the class action lawsuit.
Subway continues to deny the claims made in the class action filed earlier this year.
