Kashi granola bars class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Angela Cosgrove filed a class action lawsuit against Kashi Sales L.L.C.
  • Why: Cosgrove claims Kashi misrepresents the amount of honey in its Honey Almond Flax chewy granola bars.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Michigan federal court.

Kashi uses misleading imagery and text to misrepresent the amount of honey in its Honey Almond Flax chewy granola bars, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Angela Cosgrove claims Kashi falsely represents that honey is the primary, significant or exclusive sweetening ingredient in the Honey Almond Flax chewy granola bars.

Kashi misleads consumers by using “different hues of amber” on the front of the product’s packaging with the text “Made With Wildflower Honey” overlayed, the Kashi class action alleges.

“The representations are false and misleading because the amount of honey is negligible and de minimis, shown through the ingredient list,” the Kashi granola bars class action states.

Cosgrove claims the main sweeting ingredient in the Kashi Honey Almond Flax chewy granola bars is actually sugar and that honey is only the “eighth most predominant ingredient by weight.”

“By emphasizing the Product’s honey content, through the product name, colors and ‘Made With Wildflower Honey,’ consumers expect a greater absolute and relative amount of honey compared to non-honey sweeteners,” the Kashi class action states.

Cosgrove wants to represent a Florida class and multi-state consumer fraud subclass of individuals who have purchased the Kashi granola bars.

Kashi class action claims Honey Almond Flax chewy granola bars not worth as much due to alleged misrepresentations

Cosgrove claims she either would have paid less for the Kashi Honey Almond Flax chewy granola bars or not purchased them at all “had she known the representations and omissions were false and misleading.”

“The Product was worth less than what Plaintiff paid, and she would not have paid as much absent Defendant’s false and misleading statements and omissions,” the Kashi class action states.

Cosgrove claims Kashi is guilty of fraud and unjust enrichment and in violation of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act and several state consumer fraud acts.

She demands a jury trial and requests injunctive relief along with an award of monetary, statutory and/or punitive damages for herself and all class members.

A consumer filed a separate class action lawsuit against Kashi last year over claims it misrepresented the amount of berry in its Kashi Mixed Berry Breakfast Bars.
