Felix Custom Smoking Public Health Alert Overview:

  • Who: The U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued a public health alert regarding Felix Custom Smoking seafood products.
  • Why: Felix Custom Smoking seafood products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
  • Where: Felix Custom Smoking is based in Monroe, Wa.

The FDA issued a public health alert last Friday for Felix Custom Smoking seafood products, which are at risk of Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The alert extends to customers who bought Felix branded products directly from the company and companies and commercial and sports fishermen who have used Felix for seafood processing, packaging, and/or labeling.

The FDA bases its alert on its inspection findings from July 19, 2021 that found Listeria contamination in several samples taken from direct food contact surfaces and areas near direct food contact surfaces at Felix Custom Smoking. The inspection is still ongoing.

Felix processes a variety of seafood jerky and hot smoked, cold smoked, and frozen seafood. The FDA advises consumers to not eat any of Felix’s products or products processed by Felix and to discard any remaining products in question. Companies and commercial fishermen that have done business with Felix are advised to discard and discontinue the sale or distribution of any Felix-processed products.

Felix Custom Smoking Public Health Alert Next Steps

Felix Custom Smoking “has declined to initiate a recall of its products and is still processing seafood at this time,” according to the FDA. Loki Fish Company, which used Felix to package select products, issued its own product recall on Aug. 23, 2021 due to the same Listeria contamination risk.

A Listeria infection is most seriously concerning for the very young or elderly, immunocompromised folks, and women who are or may become pregnant, as it may become fatal. Mild symptoms of infection include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

The FDA recommends that anyone who has consumed these products should contact a healthcare provider, especially and immediately if you are experiencing illness. Additionally, you should throw away any remaining questionable products and thoroughly wash and sanitize any surface that may have had contact with contaminated foods. Further, wash hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food and any sanitation processes.

If you have a complaint or want to report an illness related to this public health alert, you can call an FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator or submit a Voluntary MedWatch form online or by mail to the FDA.
