Loki Fish Company Salmon recall Overview:

  • Who: Loki Fish Company is recalling some packages of its Keta Salmon Lox.
  • Why: The FDA detected listeria during a routine inspection at the companyโ€™s packer.
  • Where: Loki Fish Company is based in Seattle, Washington, and the products affected by the recall were distributed through companies in Portland and Seattle.

Loki Fish Company is recalling packages of its Keta Salmon Lox after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the salmon to be potentially contaminated with listeria.

Listeria monocytogenes โ€” an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people โ€” was found during the FDA inspection at the companyโ€™s packer in July.ย

Loki Fish Company is not currently facing legal action over the salmon recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The affected Keta Salmon Lox is packaged in a 4 oz. plastic package on a coated board. It is labeled as Wild Keta Lox, Loki Fish Co., Seattle, WA, and there is no Best Before date.ย

The products included in the salmon recall were distributed through Cherry Sprout Produce in Portland, and Central Co-op and Pacific Coast Harvest in Seattle. It was also sold at the University District and West Seattle Farmers Markets in Washington.

โ€œIf you have purchased this product, please do not consume it, and get rid of it immediately,โ€ Loki Fish Company said. โ€œYou can return it to your place of purchase or to Loki Fish Company at the farmers market for a full refund.โ€ย

No illnesses have been reported to date, the company said.ย

Listeria monocytogenes can also cause short-term symptoms in healthy people, the FDA says, such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, or miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.ย

As a result of the FDA finding, Loki Fish Company has submitted samples of the lox to Micro-Chem Laboratories for testing, it said. Itโ€™s also halted production, sales, and distribution of the salmon immediately and will continue an investigation as to what caused the problem.

Salmon products can sometimes be at the center of class action lawsuits. In March this year, consumers who claimed Mowi Ducktrap salmon products were mislabeled asked a federal judge to approve a $1.3 million nationwide class action settlement.ย
