Advertising claims for LED bulbs manufactured by North Carolina-based Cree Inc. are misleading, according to some consumers who have purchased the lightbulbs. Complaints include the bulbs not saving as much money as represented by the manufacturer and not lasting as long as promised. California consumers who may have experienced problems with their Cree LED bulbs may be eligible to participate in a class action investigation.
These bulbs are advertised as providing superior lighting and a life span of 15 to 32 years. Since LED bulbs tend to be pricier than traditional, incandescent light bulbs, consumers purchasing the LED variety have an expectation that they will last longer. But many who bought Cree LED bulbs say thatโs just not the case.
Are Cree LED Bulbs Backed by a Guarantee?
According to Creeโs website, its LED bulbs are designed โto work better and last longer,โ providing the customer with โa truly exceptional lighting experience.โ The company boasts that its lightbulbs are manufactured with the highest quality and workmanship. The bulbs sold in the United States come with a satisfaction guarantee.
The website explains the warranties available based on the type of LED bulb. Some LED energy-saving light bulbs are designed to last up to 23 years, but dissastisifed consumers claim that these bulbs had high failure rates and ended up being a waste of money.
Consumer Reports Testing on LED Bulbs Reveals Problems
Consumer Reports performed comprehensive testing on Cree LED spotlights that sell for $24 a piece and found that many died early in the testing process. The publicationโs website notes that Creeโs LED spotlights yielded the greatest number of LED failures ever seen by light bulb experts.
What Did the Test Reveal?
The engineers at Consumer Reports conducted a number of different tests to evaluate things like energy use, brightness, light color and more. Two of Creeโs 10 LED bulbs died during a 3,000-hour life test. One LED bulb went out before 500 hours and another failed at 1,700 hours. The Cree LED bulbs are advertised to last up to 25,000 hours, or nearly 23 years, when used three hours a day.
What Have Other Consumers Said?
Multiple visitors to Home Depotโs website have also complained about Creeโs LED bulbs. Consumer Reports says that consumers who have experienced early failure rates should be prepared to ask for a refund and take the company up on its warranty. Complaints like these are already at the heart of at least one Cree class action lawsuit.
What to Do If Your Cree LED Bulbs Failed
If you invested in Cree LED bulbs that have already failed, you may benefit from consulting a products liability lawyer about taking legal action.
