JUUL health problems may be linked to the brand’s devices putting out a higher amount of nicotine than other devices.
A recent study reportedly showed that JUUL vape pens put out a higher amount of nicotine during use than that seen in other e-cigarettes.
Researchers from Penn State asked JUUL users to puff on their devices every 20 seconds for 10 minutes – resulting in a total of 30 puffs. Afterwards, the users’ blood samples were analyzed for nicotine concentrations and compared to those from users of other e-cigarettes.
“The JUUL users we studied obtained blood nicotine concentrations almost three times as high as most of the e-cigarette users we previously studied,” study first author Jessica Yingst said.
The researchers determined that the nicotine delivery is similar to that seen in cigarettes, meaning that users are getting more nicotine from use compared to other devices.
JUUL users were reportedly also questioned about their nicotine addiction and withdrawal symptoms. Based on the evaluation of withdrawal symptoms, nicotine craving, and related anxiety levels, JUUL users reportedly showed more prominent nicotine dependence when compared to 3,000 users of other brand e-cigarettes.
“In previous studies, we found that e-cigarette users were less addicted than smokers. However, the high nicotine delivery of the product and the scores on this study suggest that JUUL is probably as addictive as cigarettes,” the researchers concluded.
The study determined that, while this mechanism may make it an effective cigarette cessation tool, JUUL vape products may not be a good choice for nonsmokers.
With JUUL products reportedly providing more nicotine than other products, users may find it hard to quit. This may lead to more prominent JUUL health problems as well as other consequences.
JUUL Health Problems
Unfortunately, these addictive vaping products are routinely used by teenagers and other nonsmokers. This may lead to JUUL health problems, including youth consumers developing a nicotine addiction.
Nicotine is an extremely addictive chemical that can result in a life long addiction even with casual use. People who are addicted to nicotine may find themselves smoking or vaping frequently and developing withdrawal symptoms after taking a break.
Nicotine withdrawal symptoms may include irritability, restlessness, feeling jittery, headaches, sweating, mood swings, anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, insomnia, cravings, and more.
When JUUL users attempt to quit vaping with the products, they may find it very difficult. The Guardian reports that people are using a variety of techniques to quit. One person reported taking Wellbutrin (an antidepressant that can have smoking cessation side effects) and using nicotine patches to quit. Others reportedly transition to lower nicotine vape products until they are nicotine-free. However, in the frustration, some consumers are allegedly turning to cigarettes in an attempt to stop JUULing.
Even if consumers are successful in quitting, they have to go through serious nicotine withdrawal symptoms which can be hard on the body and emotions. Some people may do a sort of “detox” where they take a few days after quitting cold turkey to handle the resulting symptoms.
