According to a statement released last month by CEO Kevin Burns of Juul Labs, non-smokers should avoid using his company’s popular e-cigarette.
Juul CEO Discusses Vaping
Burns gave an interview to CBS This Morning where he defended the reputation of Juul Labs. Recent reports of vaping illnesses and seizures among teens and young adults have made many consumers wary about the health issues of vaping and using e-cigarettes. Despite these reported risks, Juul markets its vaping devices as a healthier alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes.
According to the Juul CEO, the use of vape pens and e-cigarettes has gone up, and in turn these devices may be lowering cigarette smoking rates. “As our share of the cigarette industry has grown in the U.S., we have seen a high correlation of decline in the smoking rates in the United States,” Burns told CBS This Morning. “We’re at three times the historical average in terms of the decline rate of cigarettes being smoked in the United States.”
The problem however, although cigarette smoking rates are declining, and many cigarette smokers are turning to vapes and e-cigarettes, the long term health issues of vaping are not yet known. When Burns defended his company, he also warned away users who don’t already smoke.
“Don’t start using nicotine if you don’t have a preexisting relationship with nicotine. Don’t use the product. You’re not our target consumer,” he said.
What Are the Health Issues of Vaping?
Although the long term risks of using e-cigarettes and vaping devices have not yet been studied, many reports of vaping-related lung problems have surfaced in recent weeks, and cases of vaping-related seizures have been reported for years. According to an article published by Vice on Sept. 10, 2019, some users of e-cigarettes and vape pens have switched back to smoking cigarettes due to fears about the health issues of vaping.
While the dangers of smoking cigarettes are known, the dangers associated with vaping are mostly not. As more than 450 potential cases of vape-related lung illnesses have been identified, including six deaths, many smokers are turning back to more traditional methods of inhaling nicotine.
Vaping is tied to a variety of side effects. In addition to the risk of developing vape-related lung conditions, health issues of vaping may also include having seizures, experiencing chest pain, having trouble breathing, increased blood pressure and heart rate, and developing canker sores in the mouth. It is the seizures, however, that led to the FDA investigation on vaping dangers.
Background on E-Cigarettes and Vapes
E-cigarettes and vapes first hit the U.S. market in 2007 and have exploded into an industry worth billions of dollars per year. These devices are often marketed as being a safer and healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes – although the latest news belies this.
Many of the biggest vape pen brands have been criticized for allegedly marketing these products to minors and children, by flavoring the nicotine pods with kid- and teen-friendly flavors and producing the pens in bright colors.
If you or your child has suffered from vaping related side effects including seizures, you may be eligible to hire an attorney and pursue a class action lawsuit against the company. Victims may be able to collect financial compensation for medical expenses, injuries, pain and suffering, and other costs and damages.
