Growing concerns about seizures associated with the use of electronic cigaretteshave garnered the federal government’s attention.
In April 2019, there were more than 35 reports of people suffering seizures after vaping. Many of them were young people, raising questions about whether high levels of nicotine or other substances inside e-cigarettes may trigger health issues, including seizures.
By early August, the number of purported seizures caused by vaping had exceeded 125, according to CNBC. Both the federal government and poison control centers have received reports of seizures and neurological problems. Although the figure represents a relatively small risk among all e-cigarette users, it’s concerning that the impact and risk profile of vaping pens and pods is not fully known.
The cases reported to and reviewed by the FDA date to 2010, though the numbers increased in mid-2018, leading agency regulators to question whether or not a further investigation should be required to identify a possible link with seizures caused by vaping.
E-cigarettes are a multibillion dollar industry in the U.S. and have become very popular with teens. Even though many e-cigarette companies claim the devices are safe, and an alternative for those looking to curb a traditional smoking habit, their popularity with teenagers has raised the alarm with many parents.
Of chief concern to parents, safety advocates, and regulators is that the amount of nicotine inside the pods can vary significantly from one company to another. CBS News reports that JuulPods, produced by Juul Labs, for example, can have as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. In addition to possibly causing seizures or other neurological concerns, this can also increase the chance of serious nicotine addiction.
Even though the government is now taking an interest in better understanding the risk profile of e-cigarettes and vaping pods, no research has yet been able to formally link seizures caused by vaping. It’s likely that research will commence sooner rather than later given the uptick in seizure reports over the last several months. In the meantime, parents are advised to be aware of the possible risks to teenagers.
Seizures can look different from one patient to another, making it challenging to spot an active seizure and related issues. From loss of awareness and loss of consciousness to uncontrollable jerking movements, seizures can be especially dangerous when a person is driving, standing on something above the ground, like a ladder or scaffold, or near open water. All of these situations can become life-threatening, especially if no one nearby is aware of what to do. Seeking immediate medical attention is key for anyone suffering seizures caused by vaping.
