E-cigarettes are not without risks as many people have learned after developing lung issues from vaping. However, thatโs not the only possible damage that a consumer could suffer as a result of buying and using an e-cigarette. New research and reports indicate that the concerns over whether e-cigarettes cause seizures might be valid.
According to some parents, too many of todayโs e-cigarette users are young teens who might not understand the danger of addiction risk or the other possible side effects. Some of these parents believe that e-cigarettes cause seizures.
The U.S. Center for Tobacco Products recently shared announced that at least 35 reports have been filed regarding โvaping-related seizures.โ
What all 35 patients had in common was use of e-cigarettes and they all believe their medical condition and incident were related to their vaping habit. Many of those cases affected young adult or teen users, too.
Seizures might look different from one person to another, but can always be alarming to the person experiencing them. In some cases, a person might start to shake uncontrollably, which is commonly recognized as a seizure. However, thatโs not the only sign that a person is having a seizure after using vaping products.
Rather than an occurrence in which the whole body starts shaking or the person falls down, a seizure can also present as a lapse in consciousness or awareness.
The FDA now considers vaping a potential safety issue in relation to the recent uptick of people suffering seizures. While anyone using an e-cigarette could potential have a seizure, JUUL devices, in particular, have reportedly been associated with several of the reported cases.
How Can Vaping Cause a Seizure?
Now medical research is starting to emerge showing that e-cigarettes cause seizures or at least have the potential to do so. One paper shared in Frontiers in Pharmacology showed that animals could suffer seizures when they consumed nicotine. The doses given to those animals were very high in nicotine, but certain e-cigarette products like JUUL also have been connected to high nicotine levels.
Seizures are not the only way that vaping products can negatively affect users. Reports of heart and lung problems and unexplained vaping illnesses have been filed all over the U.S. across 2019.
Other neurological symptoms outside of seizures have popped up with vapers, too. When adding in the number of reports naming other neurological problems, over 127 people have suffered some kind of issue in relation to a vaping device. These other conditions included tremors and fainting. All of these were linked to vaping use from 2010 to 2019.
Many consumers use information about the products to decide which brand of e-cigarettes to buy since itโs now been publicized that thereโs a possibility e-cigarettes cause seizures. However, one study found that some e-liquid products contained far more nicotine than stated on the product packaging. Some even had nicotine levels as much as 52 percent higher than what was listed on the label.
