If you or your child has suffered heart problems due to the use of e-cigarettes or vape pens, you may be entitled to pursue compensation. Although these devices are marketed as being a healthier alternative to traditional methods of inhaling nicotine, there is evidence suggesting that use of e-cigarettes or vaping affect your heart.

Does Vaping Affect Your Heart?

Although vaping may expose the user to fewer toxins than smoke from traditional cigarettes, the vapor still contains nicotine, metals, and contaminants. Inhalation of these substances may affect your heart, your brain, and other parts of your body.

How Does Vaping Affect Your Heart?

According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, several flavors of liquid nicotine pods used in vape pens are toxic to lab grown endothelial cells, which are found in the heart. These nicotine pods may damage the cells that line the interior of blood vessels, and may increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

The flavors that were found to be the most toxic to the heart include tobacco, sweet tobacco with caramel and vanilla, fruit, butterscotch, cinnamon, and menthol. Cinnamon and menthol flavored pods are additionally harmful because they interfered with cells’ ability to form new blood vessels. These changes are associated with heart disease, and may lead to future serious health problems.

Additionally, according to WebMD, users of vape pens and e-cigarettes have a 40 percent higher chance of developing heart disease than a non-smoker. They also have an increased risk of heart attack, angina, and stroke.

Who is at Risk?

Although smoking of traditional cigarettes has plateaued among young adults and teenagers, use of e-cigarettes and vape pens has skyrocketed. The FDA found that in 2018, 3.6 million middle and high school students considered themselves to be e-cigarette users. According to FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, use of these devices has become an “exploding epidemic.” Many e-cigarette manufacturers have been accused of purposefully marketing these products to youths and teens by advertising flavors and colors that appeal to them.

Although these devices are marketed as a safer alternative to cigarettes, they still contain a high level of nicotine and other harmful chemicals. Additionally, the liquid nicotine pods in vape pens and e-cigarettes are poisonous, and may lead to serious health consequences if ingested.

Symptoms of Vape-Related Health Problems

Use of vape pens and e-cigarettes may cause many cardiovascular side effects and symptoms for users. These symptoms may include:

  • Atherosclerosis, or the thickening and hardening of arteries
  • Increased blood clotting
  • Enlargement of the aorta
  • Changes in heart rate
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased risk of stroke

If you or your child has suffered heart problems or other health conditions due to the use of e-cigarettes and vape pens, you may be entitled to hire a qualified attorney and file a class action lawsuit against the manufacturers of these devices.
