The Eaton Company has marketed two brands of outdoor lighting which according to consumers could pose a fire hazard to homes and endanger homeowners and lessees. The two brands to be aware of are Defiant solar powered LED lights and All-Pro solar powered LED lights.
Cooper Lighting, a division of the Eaton Company, markets the Defiant solar powered LED lights and All-Pro solar powered LED lights.
According to some consumers, Defiant solar powered LED lights as well as their counterpart sold under the brand name of All-Pro have batteries in them that have a tendency to overheat.
The overheating allegedly occurs because of the associated solar panel absorbing direct and ambient energy from sunlight. Unfortunately, a process that works in other models allegedly contributes to the melting of the light’s external housing with these brands in some instances.
The Defiant solar powered LED lights as well as All-Pro variety are connected to a solar panel—most often placed on a rooftop—via a wire. The Eaton company sells these motion-sensor outdoor lights through big box home improvement retailers like Home Depot and Lowe’s for between $70 to $100 each.
Homeowners should be aware of this potential hazard if they have any motion sensor outdoor lighting purchased between September 2015 and July 2018.
Consumers can identify if they have Defiant solar powered LED lights and All-Pro varieties even if they have inadvertently thrown out original packaging, instructions and warranties. The model numbers easily identify the product and should be reviewed in advance of a potential problem because they are located in the lighting fixture purported to melt in certain circumstances.
The model numbers for Defiant solar powered LED lights are:
- Defiant: MST1000LWDF
- Defiant: MST1000LWDFC
The model numbers for All-Pro solar powered LED lights are:
- All-Pro: MST800L
- All-Pro: MST800LW
- All-Pro: WPS2040M
The meltdown of the lighting housing with some units bearing these model numbers can potentially start a house fire which can entrap residents and threaten their lives. Additionally, a hazard such as this can threaten neighborhoods by possibly starting a wildfire in certain climate conditions.
Within the range date of the produced outdoor lighting products, there are believed to be approximately 350,000 in the hands of consumers. Around 12,000 units were purchased in Canada by report as well.
Throughout the U.S. and Canada, several retail outlets were involved, so even if you don’t shop at larger home improvement stores, evaluation of your outdoor lighting is warranted.
Of these units, Cooper Lighting has only received complaints and evidence of 7 meltdowns with and without property damage occurring. To date, there have been no known human injuries. The risk may seem minor with these statistics, but it is unknown how many instances of meltdown have gone unreported.
