Parents Claim Skechers Light Up Shoes Cause Burns

A class action lawsuit has been filed against major shoe brand Skechers, claiming that Skechers light up shoes cause burns. If you or a loved one have sustained chemical burns after wearing Skechers light up shoes, you may be able to file a lawsuit and pursue compensation.

Defective Skechers Light Up Shoes

According to a growing number of customers, the popular Skechers light up shoes use a faulty battery in the sole that can be quite dangerous. These batteries, known as Ni-Cad batteries, are allegedly capable of exploding, causing chemical burns. Ni-Cad batteries are small and typically used in either small devices or small spaces, like the sole of a shoe. However, consumers claim, the sole of these light up shoes are sealed tightly, and the lack of ventilation can cause the battery to overheat or even explode, potentially leading to chemical burns.

The Skechers Light Up Shoes Lawsuit

The lawsuit was filed by the mother of a 9-year-old boy who has suffered from chemical burns to his feet, which his mother, Sherry F., claims were caused by defective shoes. Sherry alleges that her son came home from school with reddened, burned feet after wearing his Skechers light up shoes all day. Furthermore, the shoe lights no longer blinked. When she took her son to a podiatrist the next day, they determined that the burns were second-degree chemical burns.

According to Sherry’s lawsuit, the batteries used in her son’s Skechers shoes were defective—and that the company had known about the potential for its battery-operated light up shoes to be defective and cause burns. After realizing this problem, the lawsuit alleges, Skechers stopped making these “problematic styles,” and then began “quietly replacing sneakers of a handful of consumers who raised the dangers of the defective sneakers to the company.”

Even then, some of these defective shoes allegedly remained on the market through third-party sellers—this is how Sherry and her son obtained the shoes in March 2018.

Skechers maintains that the lawsuit is “frivolous” and has “serious doubts” that these burns were caused by a defect with the shoes.

Customers who purchased Skechers light up shoes that include a Ni-Cad battery sometime between 2015 and the present should be aware of this risk.
