Charter Internet class action overview:
- Who: A Spectrum internet consumer is suing Charter Communications.
- Why: The plaintiff says Charter violated the law with its cancelation policy.
- Where: The Charter Internet class action was filed in a California federal court.
Charter Communications violates the law when it stops its customers’ internet immediately after they cancel their service plans, even though they have paid for their services to the end of the month, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiff Erica Steinberg filed the class action lawsuit against Charter Communications Inc. on March 10 in a California federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.
According to the lawsuit, the cancellation policy for the telecommunications company’s internet service violates state consumer laws by requiring customers to pay for the internet even after the service has been stopped.
The lawsuit says Charter offers “Spectrum InternetTM Total,” a monthly service. Consumers purchase the product to obtain internet services for their home.
“When individuals who have bought the [Spectrum] service cancel it, they are still charged for one whole month of service, even though Defendant Charter has stopped the service,” the lawsuit alleges.
Customers threatened with collections, lawsuit states
Steinberg says she first bought the Spectrum internet package from Charter about five to seven years ago, and was paying $74.99 per month.
She canceled her service June 2, 2022, due to a move, but was told she would need to pay for services through June 30, even though the internet was no longer available, she alleges.
Steinberg added that Charter used the threat of sending the bill to a collections agency, potentially affecting her credit score, to force her to pay.
“Charter essentially extorts consumers, forces them to pay unlawful termination fees and knowingly ruins consumers’ credit ratings for services that were not even used,” Steinberg alleges.
Charter conceals its cancelation policy from consumers and reaps ill-gotten gains at the expense of customers, the lawsuit states.
Steinberg seeks to represent a class of consumers who canceled their account and were still required to pay until the end of the month.
She is suing for violations of California consumers laws, breach of contract and unjust enrichment and seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial. She is also asking the court to reimburse the payments made to Charter after the cancellation of services.
Charter cable TV customers sued the company in a Connecticut federal court in January 2022 over an alleged bait-and-switch scheme.

58 thoughts onCharter class action claims company fails to prorate canceled Internet service
Please add me to the class action. I cancelled my service in 2023 and was charged for the next month’s service due to the account initiation date. Spectrum refused to negotiate or be reasonable and stopped communicating with me. Months later I got a major negative report on my credit report for the $214 they claim I owe them for a period of time they did not actually provide a service to me. I disputed that collection attempt and thought that was the end of it. Today (roughly 18 months later) I received a new derogatory report notice coming from a new collection agency. I hope you win this class action suit and cost them millions. What really irks me is if Spectrum made a reasonable offer to resolve they would have gotten some money. Instead, they have moved this to a collection agency and received pennies for it.
I canceled my service on March 27th 2025. They would not prorate my closing bill and now I must pay for April as well. I have been a long time Charter customer but that does not matter to them. They want to extort Money from all of us and that is not fair. The amount is around $109. Please add me to this case.
We cancelled our service due to repeatedly having service issues. We had (2) technicians tell us that our issue was out at the street on the main line but they never made repairs and our service was horrible. We were paying for the 600 Package and only getting 139bps !!
The billing cycle starts on the 18th and goes until the 28th of the month and due and payable on the 6th of the following month. That is a trap technique they are using. They offered no pro-rate.
I dont think this is fair. I only had the service for 6 days the last billing cycle.!!!! I’m not paying a whole month. That’s just stupid.
Currently dealing with this. Stopped service on the 6th of the month and charging a full month. Disgusting. Do you pay for the whole apple pie when you only want a slice, NOOOO!
Please add me
I need to be contacted by an attorney as well for this. I specifically asked the guy when I was canceling if I would receive a prorated credit and he had said that I would so I would like to be added to this lawsuit
Please add me in.

My brother has a Spectrum account, and he died. I am now taking over his account and we would like to cancel service once we don’t need it after the first week in May 2024 once we close down his house. BUT, since they won’t pro-rate, we need to cancel at the end of his billing cycle which is April 28, 2024. The difference would be over $250!!! This is ridiculous. I refuse to pay this and will hopefully be able to use my cell phone for hotspot or have to go to my hotel when internet is. needed. This is SO inconvenient!! I am so glad I don’t have to use mega-sized internet/cable companies for my services!
