DevaCurl Products: Overview

DevaCurl products are designed for people with curly hair. Curly hair often faces unique challenges and requires a different approach to care and maintenance. To answer these needs, DevaCurl created their “No-Poo” hair care approach.

DevaCurl No-Poo hair care aims to nourish curls and keep them healthy. The No-Poo alternative shampoo was launched in 2002 and aimed to maintain curls with products that don’t contain sulfates, parabens, or silicones. According to DevaCurl, the ingredients it uses make sure that curly hair is not stripped of its natural oils.

The brand offers a variety of products including:

  • No-Poo Cleansers (No-Poo Original, No-Poo Decedance, etc.)
  • Low-Poo Cleansers (Low-Poo Original, Low-Poo Delight, etc.)
  • One Conditioners (One Condition Original, One Condition Delight, One Condition Decedance, etc.)
  • Leave-in Conditioners
  • Curl Creams
  • Hair Oils
  • Styling Products
  • More

However, some customers claim that these products may be associated with serious adverse side effects such as scalp irritation and even hair loss.

DevaCurl: Scalp Irritation & Hair Loss

Several customers have complained about their problems with DevaCurl products in online forums.

On Sephora’s online community forum, DevaCurl customers have complained about various DevaCurl issues. One woman said that she had “gorgeous” hair before trying out DevaCurl. After using the products for a few months, she was claims that she was plagued by “crazy dandruff” and a noticeable increase in hair shedding. She argues that, after switching to a different line of products, her hair stopped thinning.

Other consumers have reported similar issues of scalp irritation and dramatic hair loss. Some consumers reportedly experienced hair falling out in “big clumps,” even after only one wash with the products.

Many posters on the thread report feeling concerned and upset after spending “so much money” on the products and getting only adverse side effects in return.

The hair loss has reportedly resulted in serious emotional harm for these customers. One Sephora poster claims that she would consistently cry over the state of her hair while others reportedly worried that something was wrong with their hair.

The No-Poo Shampoo Original is $24 for a 12 oz. bottle and $24 for a 12 oz. bottle of the conditionor that DevaCurl recommends pairing it with. If someone buys both products, it is almost $50.

Consumers on a curly hair Reddit page have expressed similar concerns. One person wrote on Reddit that her “hair was coming out by the handfuls within 2 weeks” of using DevaCurl Products. “Deva made my hair fall out like crazy,” the user said.

Consumers aren’t sure why their hair fell out after using the products. On the Reddit thread, some users theorize that the high protein content in the products could lead to damage and breakage, but no real evidence is available to explain this upsetting experience.
