liquid makeup on whiteDefective foundation pumps and similar devices have elicited consumer complaints, as they do not allow buyers to obtain the full amount of product.

A number of those who have purchased cosmetics from L’Oreal, Revlon, Maybelline, Dior, and other makeup brands are saying that the way the pump and the container of these products are designed to make it difficult, even impossible to use the entire contents.

These foundation pump complaints have been confirmed by laboratory tests, demonstrating that in a number of cases, over half of the product in a container cannot be dispensed.

Customers Express Frustrations

Most of those who have purchased cosmetic and skincare products from these companies are satisfied with the products themselves. However, they are understandably frustrated over the defective foundation pumps and product dispensers that force them to waste as much as half of what they paid for.

One customer, reviewing L’Oreal’s Face Moisturizer with SPF 30, says, “Love the product but the dispenser stopped working with half the product left in the bottle. [I] miss the old plastic dispenser that worked.”

Others say they used the product only a few times – in some cases, as little as two days – before the pump ceased working altogether. One customer, who posted on Amazon nearly a year and a half ago, said, “The shape of the bottle cap is terrible.”

She wrote that she had purchased a half-ounce bottle of L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Eye Renewal in late December and only six weeks later, the pump had jammed up with the bottle still half full. While at one time, a person could remove the lid and obtain the product by hand, new product dispensers have made that impossible.

Customers Take Legal Action

Since June of 2018, L’Oreal USA Inc. has been having to defend itself in a class action lawsuit in which plaintiffs claim the company has deliberately packaged its products in bottles with defective foundation pumps that force the user to waste as much as two-thirds of the product.

L’Oreal has received numerous complaints directly on their corporate website for some time, but according to plaintiffs, have taken no action to address customer concerns. The current class action complaint states that “there is no equitable justification for Defendant’s products to suffer from these defects,” pointing out that L’Oreal regularly employs other types of dispensers that do not have such defects.

Why do These Companies Offer Defective Foundation Pumps?

While L’Oreal itself has not responded to these allegations, a page on their corporate website indicates that ironically, the purpose of changing the packaging was to reduce the use of non-recyclable plastics, which they acknowledge represents nearly 60 percent of the materials used to produce product packaging. L’Oreal claims that their objective has been to reduce the weight and volume of packaging using recyclable and renewable materials.

According to the current class action lawsuit, one of the company’s solutions has been to use glass, which is recyclable – but the containers are fitted with defective foundation pumps that make it virtually impossible to remove and use the product.

Laboratory testing has shown that significant amounts of the liquid cosmetics–sometimes more than half–are not dispensed from these containers.
