Woman sitting on tailgate of pickup truckIf you are the current owner of a GM truck, you might have already heard the news that certain GMs have been connected to a defective fuel pump. Some consumers are considering their rights to file a defective fuel pump lawsuit. To identify whether or not you might have grounds to initiate a defective fuel pump lawsuit, you should first check whether or not your vehicle is affected by this issue.

If your truck hasnโ€™t yet had a failure because of this possible issue, you might need to be on the lookout for potential problems. According to Pep Boys, fuel pressure gauge malfunctions, sputtering in the engine as your car gets closer to high speeds, and rising temperature are all problems linked to fuel pumps. All of these signs should be taken seriously.

Has a Lawsuit Already Been Filed?

According to a Reuters Report, one GM class action lawsuit alleges that GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD Diesel trucks and Chevy Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD trucks were equipped with defective fuel pumps that are not compatible with diesel fuels sold in the United States.

Texas and California owners of the diesel trucks in these models manufactured between 2011 and 2016 might have to pay thousands of dollars in repair costs to fix these vehicles.

Whatโ€™s Wrong with These GM Fuel Pumps?

The defective fuel pump lawsuit was brought by two plaintiffs who argued that the Bosch CP4 fuel pumps inside these cars were created to save money.ย The underlying argument is that the pumps use a reduced amount of fuel because of higher fuel pressures with reduced volume. However, U.S. diesel fuel, according to the lawsuit, doesnโ€™t have enough lubrication to stop the CP4 pumps from failing.

Hot Cars reports that the fuel pump problem started when GM tried to capitalize on an increasing demand for pick-up trucks that ran on diesel.

Car Complaints says that GM advertised that the vehicles have high power and low fuel bills, in order to make them attractive to prospective customers. Allegedly, the company advertises that the vehiclesย  will run for between 500,000 and 800,000 miles. However, customers argue that this was not the case.ย

Reportedly, GM worked with Bosch, a German auto parts supplier to create high-pressure fuel injection pumps for their trucks.ย The Detroit News explains that that the pumps are designed to work with European diesel, which is thicker than American diesel. However, because American diesel is thinner, it provides less lubrication than European diesel.

This can then reportedly cause air pockets to from inside the fuel injection pump. When there are air pockets in the pump, as opposed to having the pump coated in diesel, metal can reportedly rub on metal, which generates metal shavings and causes operational problems, says The Detroit News.

Car Complaints says that the problems associated with this incompatibility between the pump and American diesel can be costly. Some owners say that repairs can cost up to $20,000, especially as the pumps may have to be repacked.

Additionally, some customers say that the pumps can fail even in just the first mile of driving, meaning that drivers may face a serious cost almost immediately. Some customers report that the engine failure is sudden and catastrophic, and others describe that the pump explodes from the problem.

Did General Motors Know About the Fuel Pump Problem?

The class action lawsuit argues that General Motors was aware of the diesel fuel pump problems and knew that this would make the vehicles much less valuable than they otherwise would be without the high pressure CP4 pumps.

The lawsuit also argues that GMC and Chevy trucks have other problems because there are inaccurate lift pumps that could be installed to help supply fuel to the pumps.

This leads to unnecessary wear and tear and overall damage to the pumps. GM is accused in this defective fuel pump lawsuit of failing to install a filter between the injectors and the pump to stop metal shavings from going through the fuel systems of the truck. This can lead to significant problems for owners and massive repair costs.

What Does Replacing a Fuel Pump Cost?

Replacing a fuel pump could go as high as $10,000 in repair costs for the consumer, according to those consumers who filed suit against GM. The plaintiffs who have initiated the lawsuit allege that they should have been told about the damage potential when purchasing the vehicle and some of them say they would not have made the purchase decision if they knew about the possibility of GM fuel pump failure.

Our GMC 3500 Sierra failed twice. $11k to fix it the first time, $18k to fix it the second time. We could not afford the fix and had to let it go. We would like to join a class action suit to recoup some of our losses. I tried to contact an attorney named in one of the articles I read and received no response.

My 2015 Silverado K2500 Duramax diesel had the fuel pump blow up at the end of June 2021 sending shards of metal through out the engine. The dealer attempted to fix it at a cost of $11,000 but were not able to complete the repairs. We have purchased a new engine for $17,000+ and the mechanic is still having problems with the fuel system. The truck loses power when it climbs a grade. As of this date May 10, 2022. We have not been able to use the vehicle and are beginning to wonder if it will ever be back in use. If we can join a class action law suit and recover any of our costs it would at least give us some consolation. We need help.

My 2016 2500 HD Denali pick up truck same problem fuel pump exploded I canโ€™t afford to fix it right now and I still owe a lot of money on the truck this problem is ridiculous it should have been a recall or at least let us know that has a faulty fuel pump when purchased

  5. Mike Bryant says:

I bought a 2015 with 53000 miles on and was not aware of this issue. Have had no problems yet, but want info on everything.

The absolute lowest of the low part of this is chevy engineers know full well when they put these in roughly how long it will take for them to implode and what they do is design their vehicles around lemon laws specifically so that they can claim the vehicle surpassed the lemon law so there is no need for them to fix anything ! They went 15 years before admitting guilt with our truck ! There is no way in hell they didnโ€™t know these wouldnt fail just like they knew full well the pumps on our Detroitโ€™s would fail and the law with all of its infinite wisdom sides with them building junk and selling it at a premium just likecthey open tax payer coffers anytime they need a bailout ! If this law firm is worth its weight it will use our detroit diesels as a case to use to solidify this one as a pattern of negligence specifically based upon chevys fuel pump and fuel delivery cause lift pump systems on our truck is junk as well as the injector pump ! This case should have a foot note included so that those of us whom still have a detroit that is still not fixed all electronic controlled that was never properly fixed should be 100% compensated in a buy back ! The lady I worked with said chevy will not replace these because they exceed lemon laws well if they knew that chevy was negligent like they are lemon laws would have applied back then but they lied and it took 15 years to get them to admit it ! These should have never been allowed on the road they run away at stop lights no notice go full throttle on their own .they issued a bulletin in 2014 on my truck finally owning up but fixed zero then replaced a junk pump with another junk pump ! 13 pumps ive put in at my own cost ! A diesel that will only go 80 to 100k isnt a diesel its a nuisance !

  7. Steven Bean says:

Like i said they did this to us with our electronic controlled late 90s detroit diesels they never fixed mine just added it up ive sunk 23,000 into it which is almost what i paid brand new in 99 for it ! So Iโ€™ve got a 50k lawn ornament they were court ordered back then to fix but never did ! Nothing happened to them ! Ohh well do an update on the pump they do updates it still didnt work ! Ohh well put a new pump in ! It did zero ..people ssy its the pmd which is a lie ! Ive got 4 brand new pmds on hand 2 came with 1300.00 pumps i bought ! Had i paid to have install id be about 100k in the hole for a truck I barely got to drive We need a class action suit those of us who still have one that didnโ€™t get fed up with gms lies we need to force them to buy back all the old trucks remaining or give those of us who have one as a lawn ornament like myself all this time a new truck free n clear we should have got the first time around ! Nobody held them accountable they just accepted their word they would fix the pumps ! They never did !

  8. Steven Bean says:

Any lawyer please contact me we were promised chevy would fix our defective injection pumps in 1999 they drug the case out and fixed nothing ! the ds4831 5521 stanadyne injection pumps all electronic controlled would be properly fixed back in 1999 on our new trucks ! Chevy did zero to fix anything now years later im stuck with a truck that has 100k miles and Iโ€™ve never been able to enjoy ! Stanadyne has discontinued building new pumps out of fear they will be sued they did multiple upgrades none of which helped replaced the whole pump that never worked ! And since left me hanging ! Iโ€™ve spent 13,000 not hundred but thousand plus on just new injection pumps ! These pumps are electronic controlled so they throttle up and down on their own and self cavitate then die ! I can be sitting at a stop light and the when the truck runs it will throttle up on its own full speed ahead with my foot not even being on the throttle ! They screwed us thry were ordered to fix it or buy our trucks back ! And refused to do so now im stuck with a 50,000.00 lawn ornament ! I either want compensation or a new truck or both ive been screwed enough years now im retired and really need my truck it gets a new pump and dies a few thousand miles later ! This is unacceptable customer service says tough ! This is really what will kill chevy ! They lie then screw its loyal customer base ! That is not the right thing to do they should be ordered to buy back all electronic controlled trucks they clearly were not ready for production. They rushed the all electronic pump out and they have a mind of their own ! A mind thats got people killed im sure ! They need to man up and buy them back Or install a motor in the truck that wonโ€™t implode like this one at 100k miles ! For a diesel 100k miles is unacceptable they go a minimum of 500k most cummings are a million mile motor.
