Harley-Davidson has recalled more than 40,000 model year 2024 motorcycles due to a defect that can cause a loss of power while in motion.
The motorcycle recall was reported to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Sept. 11. It applies to 41,637 of the following models of Harley-Davidson motorcycles:
- HARLEY-DAVIDSON/FLHX/2024
- HARLEY-DAVIDSON/FLHXSE/2024
- HARLEY-DAVIDSON/FLTRX/2024
- HARLEY-DAVIDSON/FLTRXSE/2024
- HARLEY-DAVIDSON/FLTRXSTSE/2024
According to the Harley-Davidson recall, one of the wires on the motorcycles may rub on the front corner of the crankcase. Over time, the wire insulation can wear, exposing the wire and potentially causing a short to ground.
“If a short to ground occurs, the 60-amp main fuse may open, resulting in a loss of propulsion, combined with a loss of all electrical power, without prior indication to the rider,” the Harley-Davidson recall says. “The unexpected loss of propulsion combined with the loss of all electrical power while in motion, without the ability to restart, may increase the risk of a crash.”
Free fix offered, Harley-Davidson recall says
Harley-Davidson said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with the condition to date.
Owners of affected motorcycles will be advised to arrange service with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, who will fix the motorcycles at no charge to the customer. Owner notifications will happen by Sept. 27.
In July, Honda recalled more than 40,000 off-road motorcycles as the grip can detach from the handlebar, posing crash and injury hazards.
