Toyota car owners have secured a settlement resolving class action allegations that Toyota Sienna’s power sliding rear doors are defective.

If you owned or leased a 2011 to 2018 Toyota Sienna, you could get your vehicle inspected, repaired and have out-of-pocket expenses paid from this class action settlement.

According to the Toyota class action lawsuit, the sliding doors in Toyota Sienna vehicles fail to latch because of a defect — presenting a serious safety concern.

“Doors sliding open while the van is in motion can result in passengers (especially young children) falling out of or being ejected from a moving vehicle,” the Toyota Sienna class action lawsuit states.

Several plaintiffs pointed to a safety advisory issued by Toyota, as well as several complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from other car owners regarding the defect.

“Toyota not only knew of the NHTSA complaints, it had received 399 additional direct reports of the condition through warranty claims and field reports,” the Toyota defective door class action lawsuit claims.

The Toyota class action lawsuit claimed that the defect in the Toyota Sienna door affected vehicles as far back as 2011. The plaintiffs said that they and others had to pay for repairs and other expenses as a result of the defect.

“While Toyota knew about the Defective Doors and the dangers they present for over a decade, Toyota continued to manufacture, market, sell, lease, and warrant its Siennas in order to reap profits, without disclosing that the power sliding doors were inherently defective, dangerous and created a grave risk of bodily harm and death,” the Toyota class action lawsuit states.

In October 2017, plaintiffs Dillen Steeby and Paula McMillin, among others, were added as additional plaintiffs after raising similar claims in a separate Toyota class action lawsuit.

Toyota agreed to settle the class action lawsuit in December 2018. The car maker has agreed to provide free inspections, repairs, and loaner vehicles to Class Members through a “Customer Confidence Program.”

Under the terms of the program, Class Members can bring their 2011 through 2018 Toyota Sienna to a Toyota dealer to get it checked out at no cost.

Class Members can also claim reimbursement for repair costs associated with the alleged defect accrued before March 1, 2019. Proof of expenses are required to make a claim for reimbursement, including proof of ownership and invoices.

The deadline for Class Members to make claims for out-of-pocket expenses is 60 days from the final approval hearing scheduled for June 4, 2019 or Aug. 2, 2019.

The deadline for Class Members to object or exclude themselves from the Toyota Sienna door class action settlement is May 3, 2019.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members include those who owned or leased a 2011 through 2018 Toyota Sienna who either experienced sliding door problems or suspect problems.

Potential Award

Inspection, repair, out-of-pocket expenses.

All Class Members can take advantage of the “Customer Confidence Program” at any Toyota dealership, including a free inspection, repair, and loaner vehicle if necessary.

Class Members who accrued out-of-pocket expenses related to the sliding door on their Toyota Sienna before March 1, 2019 can make a claim for reimbursement.

Proof of Purchase

Proof of ownership and related expenses are required for Class Members making out-of-pocket claims.

    hi, i have 2018 toyota sienna xle. today my rear driver side sliding power door stop working.i have only 48000 miles. so i called toyota regarding this problem. she said you are out of warranty right now . so i will schedule service you have to pay cost from your pocket. i mentioned her about this lawsuit claim. but she said i dont have this information.

    I have a 2006 Toyota Van my passanger side rear sliding doors has been giving trouble several years ago. Open when it feels like. Open half way. Now for the last 2 years it does not work anymore and I cannot open the door. It is an inconvience becuase everyone have to come in from the drivers side.
    Due to all the complaints and issue other owners is having Toyota should pay to repair and replace the parts for the door.

    My company has a fleet of 9 2017-2019 Sienna. These are high mileage, with some incurring 120k in a year. We currently have 6 vans where we have manually disabled the power feature because the door would not close- stops about 12” from sill and reopens. Have to manually push back edge of door closed from outside. Sound like other problems?

    2001 Toyota Sienna electric slider door on rt side, Flys open while driving.
    Or try to open it and then it is stuck open, cannot get it to close. I have had to use a bundie strap to strap it to front headrest and make certain nothing was near the door to fly out! Stuck open, won’t shut, or Flys open when driving, I do not let anyone sit on rear rt passenger side, luckily one day my granddaughter was old enough to sit up front, bc the slider just flew open.
    Then it wouldn’t shut!

    I have gad it in for repairs, several times… Not fixed.
    It is not safe! I have been stranded bc door ajar alot, in rain, and so rain in van, all weather and then dead battery next day.
    Not able to drive to a important preop.

    Also I have been stuck inside the van, door handles break all the time.
    Driver door inside handle broke, trying to reach out to open door, in over 100 degree weather, my arm was burnt due to the temp. My arm not long enough to reach outside door handle, by myself, had to climb into back to get out… I thought but left slider wouldn’t open.
    I was stuck Inside the vehicle, til a passerby came asked to please open my door.

    I say to everyone, do not touch that rt slider to open it from the outside or inside.

    Granddaughter’s cousins opened before I could say, no, the door was stuck open and we were driving in from the mountains that day, the road noise, I couldn’t get the door to release. It was stuck in an open position.

    One time it was ajar and I didn’t know it, came out to find it ajar, w lots of valuables in vehicle.
    It was stuck! My dash light was on when I returned to the vehicle, no one was with me nor touched that slider, it must have popped open when I shut drivers door.

    I was stuck I parking lot forever trying to get the door to shut, it wouldn’t, I had to take the risk of driving it on the Fwyike that, hoping to God it wouldn’t release and completely fly open.
    Meanwhile once again, door was stuck open, while I had a appt and had to leave vehicle in a parking lot w the door ajar, light killing battery and hoping no one could get it to release and steal things out of my vehicle!

    It’s been a major ordeal, and very dangerous.

    Kids need to exit on the right side at schools etc, not in traffic on left side!!!!

    The electrical issue is ridiculous.
    I have never went through soo many batteries on 1 vehicle as I have w this one, before warranty is up, battery is dead.
    Buy a new battery and then the vehicle kept just shutting down on me! Sitting w ac on in over 100 degree weather w engine running, while waiting for a prescription, car dies won’t start.
    Then once I get a jump start from AAA, it’s as if the van had grimlins I called it,.
    Roll window up it goes down instead, roll window down, it goes up instead! Door locks wouldn’t work. Had to open door on passenger side and climb over to driver seat, I am disabled had knee issues, heart testing back to back test, vehicle wouldn’t start or would bit then would shut down and everything went on the blink windows locks everything, grimlins!
    2 months I went through this making me late to every appt I had!
    I couldn’t afford to have dealer look at it.
    I used up all of my AAA calls, brand new battery dead!
    It wasn’t the alternator, I was stuck In 111 degrees after having heart testing, w isotopes!!!!! Dying in the heat!!!
    The paint, the van leaks water inside when it rains, the headlights have never been bright enough to see on the road, it’s like driving I the dark.
    I put the most expensive light bulbs in it still everyone asks me, are you headlights on? Yes they are.

    The rt front brake was burning up going up the mountain, I smelled brakes, thought it was someone else coming down the hill riding there brakes.
    On the way down the mountain, I smelled it, I don’t ride my brakes I use lower gears…
    I pulled off and the rt front side was red hot(at night) and smoking, couldn’t put my hand near it it was so hot.
    I wasn’t riding my brake. I will not go on a mountain road now, let anyone sit next to rt slider, and hope Noone touches that door, bc it fouls it up.

    There are many issues w this year of van!
    Much more.
    I was always a Toyota owner, now I wouldn’t purchase another one! Or recommend any else to, I have had many friends who owned Hondas and I got them into Toyota’s, the 2012 camry is a pile, like a tin can, getting blown all over the road, my gf love her older camry, w over 300k miles on it.
    She purchased this newer one is completely not satisfied, she going back to Honda!

    Your door handles break, your stuck in the car, or stuck outside of the car if outside handle breaks.
    I have never in my life seen such cheap poor workmanship.
    Y 1998 Toyota Sienna had real headlights that worked, all the lights inside were bright enough to see inside the vehicle… This van I must use a flash light to see inside at night.
    Door locks broke, now they dont even work manually.
    Must go to all doors and check them!
    Hit door lock drivers door may lock or may not, passenger door doesn’t always lock.
    Have to walk over there and open door and push the lock manually, slider doesn’t always lock either!
    So discusted with this model.

    I have a 2007 XLE AW Drive Sienna and have had problems with the 2 back electric sliding doors. I could not close the back door at a restaurant and had to drive it home with the door OPEN. My husband was able to forceably close the door to make the 1 hour drive to the Toyota Dealer. The Toyota Dealer made the doors manual (for $400) After a few weeks the doors WOULDN’T EVEN OPEN FROM THE INSIDE OR THE OUTSIDE MOST OF THE TIME AND MY GRANDCHILDREN WERE ALWAYS STUCK INSIDE THE VAN AND HAD TO CLIMB TO THE FRONT SEAT TO GET OUT. To me that is a very serious condition and the dealer said it would cost $1,000 to fix each door back to an automatic sliding door. I hear the motors on the doors running when I can get the door open (with much force). They said there might be a class action suit for these doors but I have heard nothing and don’t know if it is in the works. In the meantime, it is very dangerous the way the doors are – and heaven forbid there is an accident!!! Please advise.
