iphoneA group of iPhone users has filed an Apple class action lawsuit after news of the iPhone slowdown scandal, alleging they were negatively impacted.

According to the Apple class action lawsuit, the tech giant purposely released an update to its older iPhones that slowed the devices’ performance speeds and lowered the battery performance.

The lawsuit alleges that Apple failed to disclose that it would perform the slowdown operation on many of these devices by undergoing what seemed to be a simple update. According to the Apple class action lawsuit, Apple’s lack of transparency regarding the slowdown was unfair and deceptive. Many Apple users have been affected by the issue, the lawsuit claims.

One of the named plaintiffs, Ohio woman Kristin B., purchased an iPhone 6 in 2014, and regularly installed Apple’s iOS updates. Her phone began experiencing the effects of the slowdown update and the battery issue. In 2017, Kristin purchased an iPhone 7 Plus.

Had she been warned about the slowdown and battery problem, she alleges that she would not have purchased these products—or would have at least been willing to pay far less for them.

Kristin’s situation is similar to many others who have also been affected by the slowdown and battery issue. The Apple class action lawsuit encompasses class members from all across the country.

The Apple class action lawsuit was filed on January 19, 2018, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Background of the iPhone Slowdown

Apple has admitted to knowingly implementing system updates to older iPhone models which would slow down their ability to process as the battery gets older. This update was done, the company claimed, in an attempt to prevent these older phones from unexpected shutdowns. However, a side effect of the update was slower performance.

Some consumers claim that Apple’s reason for the iPhone slowdown was not to extend battery life, but rather to encourage customers to upgrade to a newer iPhone by making their current phone slower and less appealing. IPhone users, not having been warned about the slowdown, might have felt compelled to buy a new device instead because of the performance issues.
