Unum disability insurance disability benefits claim denial rejectedA Tennessee woman recently filed an Unum bad faith lawsuit against the insurance giant, claiming it wrongfully denied her insurance benefits.

The plaintiff, Susan G., filed this Unum lawsuit over denied payment of both short-term and long-term disability benefits from the company. Her Unum insurance is provided through her work with Humphreys County Board of Education, and is meant to protect her financially in the event that she can no longer work because of an accident or illness.

According to the Unum bad faith lawsuit, the denial of Susan’s benefits comes despite her suffering from chronic medical conditions. These chronic conditions include hypothyroidism, spinal stenosis, anemia, and degenerative joint disease, which lead to chronic fatigue and pain that has made her unable to work since May 22, 2015, the Unum lawsuit asserts.

After initially filing a claim for disability benefits because of her severe medical problems, Unum approved her short-term disability claim. However, shortly thereafter, Unum terminated her short-term benefits and denied her claim for future benefits.

Susan attempted to counteract this by filing an administrative appeal, but by December 2015, Unum had denied that appeal as well.

The Unum lawsuit alleges that Susan has suffered substantial financial damage because of Unum’s denial of benefits—she fell behind on mortgage payments, and in April 2016, she was forced to sell her home far below its value.

Having exhausted all administrative approaches to resolving this issue, Susan has turned to litigation against Unum in the hopes of receiving her benefits.

Filing a Unum Bad Faith Lawsuit Over Denied Insurance Benefits

Unum Life Insurance Company of America, also known as Unum, is the largest disability insurance company in the United States.

A growing number of plaintiffs in similar situations to Susan’s have filed an Unum lawsuit after being denied short and/or long-term insurance benefits they were owed according to their policies with Unum. These plaintiffs allege that the insurance giant unfairly denied claim for insurance benefits they were rightfully owed.

Susan’s Unum bad faith lawsuit and others like it allege that Unum unfairly denied claims for insurance benefits by plaintiffs who are, in fact, qualified to receive such benefits. Some Unum lawsuits go further, alleging that the company purposely denied claims of insurance benefits for hundreds of thousands of workers with legitimate disabilities, placing company profit ahead of client safety.

Consumers who have exhausted all recourse through applications and appeals for disability benefits may turn to filing an Unum lawsuit in response, hoping to reverse their denied claim of insurance benefits from Unum.

If you or someone you know has been denied their proper insurance benefits by Unum Life Insurance Company of America, you may be able to file a Unum lawsuit over a denied claim for insurance benefits.

The Unum Bad Faith Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-00662, in the Circuit Court for Humphrey’s County, Tennessee.
