The U.S. Department of Justice has secured nearly $4 million in remission from a Walmart gift card scam.

The remission program benefits consumers who purchased a Walmart gift card between April 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017, as a result of a fraudulent scheme in which scammers directed victims to purchase gift cards.

The Walmart scams allegedly started in 2015 when fraudsters instructed victims to purchase Walmart gift cards ranging from $500 to $1,000.

Between 2016 and 2017, Walmart reportedly froze the balances of gift cards suspected to be a part of the fraudulent scheme and the Department of Justice sought this frozen money to refund customers.

Walmart gift card scams can occur in a variety of ways and often target consumers by posing as loved ones in trouble or a legitimate company or government agency.

The Department of Justice filed a complaint for forfeiture of the $3,958,060.84 in gift card balances frozen by Walmart. This money is now available for remission payments.

Consumers can receive a remission payment based on the amount loaded onto the Walmart gift cards they purchased. Payments will be reduced if consumers already received payments from a bank or another source. Remission payments will not cover collateral expenses related to the scheme.

There is no exclusion or objection deadline for this remission.

There is no final approval hearing for the Walmart gift card scam remission.

In order to receive a payment, consumers must file a remission form by July 14, 2023.

  2. Diane Yelton says:

I bought 5 gift cards from Wal Mart grocery. Have no proof now. Cards were for $50.00 each. Would be nice to receive money back.

    1. Angela Oss says:

I’ve bought at least 10 gift cards in this time period

  4. CATHERINE L RERISI says:

please add me, I purchased at least 10 gift cards in a year. unfortunately I do not have any documentation showing this. I close that bank account years ago.

  5. Maria Standley says:

Last year before Christmas, I was given two gift cards ( from Tremdeous) with small amounts of balance, I received notice in my e-mail that I was selected as a winner of a Walmart gift card for $500.00, and all I had to do was pay shipping and handling, which I did from one of the other cards but never received the Walmart $500.00 gift card in the mail. These sites need to stop with the scaming of the consumers.
So where did the shipping and handling of $6.99 go and to who.

  6. Teri B Plemmons says:

I purchased three cards, was charged for four. I went back several times to the Walmart, to get my money back. No go as far as they were concerned their camera showed that I had bought four. What they didn’t understand is that the cashier had tried to activate one of the cards, it wouldn’t activate. Manager came over to the cashier, did something on the register, and told me that my money would be refunded back to my bank account, (using my debit card). It never came back into my account. I even found the cashier one day and she remembered me. I was basically called a thief by the store manager. I never got my money back and I swore I would never shop at a Walmart again for those types of things. That was Christmas of 2017. My roommate reimbursed me as I had bought the cards on his behalf. He was with me and had handed the cashier another card to replace the one she was unable to activate and that’s all that they said they saw. If I don’t qualify as I don’t have any data left due the amount of time that has lapsed and no receipt at least this comment will be read, $50 card and another $3-5 to activate it. Indeed!

  7. Lisa says:

Add me. I was scammed by gift cards by Giant Foods and Weiss 👌

  8. Mark Crutcher says:

This is different, but I just recently purchased a PlayStation gift card for my nieces birthday… Turns out she doesn’t have PlayStation she has Xbox..We had receipt so we tried to exchange it for XBox.. Walmart wouldn’t exchange it wouldn’t refund it, I was just screwed because I couldn’t remember what gaming console she had… Walmart shouldn’t even be in the business of selling them if they can’t give refunds or exchange them..( They treat everyone as if they’re ripping them off with all the checking receipts before you walk out the door… when in fact we the consumers are probably the ones being ripped off…

    1. Diana says:

Please add me I was buying gift cards as Christmas gifts for my nephews and nieces. They were so disappointed when they tried to use them and there was no money on the card! I was scammed. And now they no longer have the card and I no longer have any documentation that I bought the cars. What was walmart thinking?
