Outside Integrated Media has agreed to a nearly $1 million to resolve claims it disclosed subscriber information to third parties.

The class is made up of anyone who, between Aug. 4, 2015, and July 30, 2016, purchased a subscription directly from the publisher of Backpacker, Clean Eating, Climbing, Gym Climber, Outside, Oxygen, Rock and Ice, SKI, Trail Runner, Triathlete, VeloNews, Women’s Running or Yoga Journal for delivery to a Michigan address.

Outside Integrated Media produces a number of health, fitness and outdoor publications, calling itself “the world’s leader in active lifestyles.”

Plaintiffs accuse Outside of disclosing information about its subscribers’ subscriptions before July 30, 2016, a violation of Michigan’s Preservation of Personal Privacy Act.

The company denies any wrongdoing but has agreed to the settlement to resolve these claims.

Under the terms of the Outside Integrated Media settlement, a minimum fund of $998,406.92 will be used to pay class members, administration costs and other expenses related to the case.

Class member payment amounts will depend on how many requests for exclusion the settlement administrator receives.

Each class member will receive a proportionate share of the fund; class counsel estimates individual payments will be around $50.

A final fairness hearing is set for Aug. 9, 2022.

The deadline to object to or opt out of the Outside Integrated Media settlement is July 8, 2022.

Class members who received a postcard notice and would like to receive a payment do not need to take any action.

Class members who did not receive a notice but would like to receive a payment must submit a claim form by July 8, 2022.
