Genuine Parts Co. and Warren Oil agreed to pay $10.85 million to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming their tractor hydraulic fluid — sold under brands such as Napa and Coastal — doesn’t meet required specifications.

The lawsuit settlement benefits consumers who purchased NAPA Quality Tractor Hydraulic & Transmission Fluid, Warren 303 Tractor Fluid, Carquest 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluid, Coastal 303 Tractor Fluid or Lubriguard Tractor Hydraulic and Transmission Oil since July 26, 2014.

Warren Oil sells hydraulic fluid to protect tractor engines from rust, oxidation and other problems. Similar products are sold under NAPA, Carquest, Coastal and Lubriguard brands.

However, according to a class action lawsuit, the 303 tractor hydraulic transmission fluid products do not meet any original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications. As a result, the products can allegedly cause damage to tractors and other equipment.

Plaintiffs in the case say they suffered from financial harm based on false advertising and damage to their equipment. Some consumers may have had to spend thousands of dollars to repair damage from faulty hydraulic fluid use.

The tractor hydraulic fluid class action lawsuit sought damages from the defendants for this financial harm.

Genuine Parts Co. and Warren Oil defendants haven’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay a combined $10.85 million to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the tractor hydraulic fluid settlement, class members can receive a cash payment for purchases and repairs.

Purchase payments are based on the number of products class members purchased and the total amount they paid. Specifically, class members can receive $25 for each five-gallon bucket, $10 for each two-gallon jug, $5 for each one-gallon jug and $100 for each 55-gallon drum.

Individual payments are capped at $200 unless class members can provide proof of purchases over $200.

Class members can also receive a payment for any repairs, parts or damage that resulted from the hydraulic fluid.

Damage covered by the settlement includes scratching, corrosive wear, rippling, ridging, pitting, spalling and scoring of the gears and metal components, seal damage, spiral gear damage, metal abrasion, corrosion, surface wear, clutch wear and breakage, wet brake damage, pump failure, leakage, and damage from deposits, sludging and thickening affecting seals, pumps, filters, gears and other parts. Repair payments are capped at $5,000 unless class members can provide documentation of repairs over $5,000.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Feb. 20, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the tractor hydraulic fluid lawsuit settlement is scheduled for March 9, 2023.

In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 20, 2023.
