A Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement resolves a class action lawsuit claiming that some of its Kia and Hyundai vehicles suffer from engine defects that can lead to failure.

The Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found in the “Who’s Eligible” section below.

According to the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit, the class vehicles suffer from a defect related to the engine’s connecting rod bearing. This bearing can allegedly fail, causing engine seizure, stalling, engine failure and even engine fires — all of which may not be covered by warranty.

Kia is a South Korea-based vehicle company that owns both Hyundai and Kia brands.

Kia hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the Hyundai class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive out-of-pocket expense reimbursement, compensation for trade-ins and sales, compensation for total vehicle losses, warranty extensions and participate in a rebate program.

To be eligible for certain types of compensation — such as for rental car, towing, ride-sharing or other transportation and incidental expenses — under the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, the knock sensor detection software (KSDS) update on the class vehicle must be performed on or before Nov. 4, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Aug. 7, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement was held Sept. 8, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim for most benefits in the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit is July 8, 2024.

Please add me. I have a 2021 Kia Forte LXS. Thank you.

  2. Deborah Dennington says:

I have a 2016 Kia Sorrento, it had 120,000 miles on it, and the engine locked up.

  3. Bridget Schroeder says:

My 2019 Kia Forte does not qualify for this case, but does have the same engine as some of the qualifying vehicles. In June of 2023, my rod bearing shot and caused a knock in the engine. Since then, we have been quoted thousands of dollars in repairs (for a vehicle we’re still ridiculously paying on). As a result of this, the timing chain and other engine components have now gone and the car has been undriveable since last June. I have had to buy an entire new vehicle, because none of the Kia dealers around me would take affirm or any financing options for a $10,000 purchase and buying a new vehicle was my only option. I am just now two years into owning the Forte, with not having driven it in 8 months. The exact model of my vehicle qualifies for the class action and the exact engine, but not my vehicle, simply because it’s a year older. I have been stuck without that vehicle for so long with no answers and no answers at all.

My kia optimas engine failed while my 15 year old so. Was driving it on the freeway at 65 mph while we on the wsy to sau bye to my dying dad , got a jump made it to the auto store to have codes read nothing wrong , it started one last time made it to a hotel where it sat until my brother
ì 450 miles to tow it. 7 moths it sat at the dealer with no loaner car because they were all loaned out so i had to pay for a rental for the to tell me they wont replace it without 9 grand because of a recall i never received. They bought my car (that was almost psid off put me in a soul that was200 more a month while putting what i still owed gor the optima on the end of my loan. This put my in debt so much with just rental cars one waiting for mine to be fixed my credit it literally shot. Ive yried contacting lawyer after lawyer but get no where its bullshit.

  5. Renee Barnhart says:

Have to check specifics on our Kia Forte but we had multiple engine problems. Right after we got it the engine would just die on the highway (very dangerous). Happened numerous times!

    1. Carla Phillips says:

Good evening, we have had nothing but problems of the same nature with our 2017 Forte… the engine willl stall out and we have to put in N and then it will kick back up… I have contacted the highway safety ppl, Kia, and no one seems to care.. the 2017 Fortes were under a recall. But according to Kia only the ones made earlier in the year, and not our.. but we are having same problems as the recalled ones… I just don’t know who to contact to get something done to correct the situation, it seems the company’s only care about the money and really not people’s safety. I guess they will decide when enough people are seriously injured or killed. Sorry bout the rant… maybe together we can find a solution!!!.

      1. Thomas McCabe says:

I was going to buy a 2017 Sorento with the gdi but the dealer said it needs a motor due to cracked cylinders. Would it be covered for a new motor if I bought it today? Vin 5XYPGDA33HG203688 has 123191 miles

  6. Nicole Prewitt says:

Back in the 70’s when I was a little girl, I was able to write to a Corporation and let them know how I felt about their products and would be awarded with a small product and a letter of gratitude. Back in those days, a customer is always right, but not anymore, these days Corporations will swallow you up and spit you out and not a care in the world.

I am very disappointed in the way I have been treated by Kia Corporate and the two dealerships that I have dealt with. When I bought the car back in August 2019, I was told with these words, “You want to buy that car?” with a puzzled look on the woman’s face. I bought the car with 23k miles and of course it was a used 2016 Kia Soul at the Downtown Kia.

In August of 2019, I purchased a used 2016 Kia Soul with about 23k Mile from Downtown Kia. I kept it maintained and was adamant when the 3k miles was up, I made sure I went and had my oil changed. I never missed a payment and all was good. Then around June of 2022 I received a recall notice to take it in and around this time my check engine light came on and my mechanic checked and it had to do with the catalytic converter. So I took the car to the Alhambra Dealership to take care of the recall and I believe around this time the car was like at 95k miles. Then by Sunday, October 1,2022 on my way to work on the freeway the car wasn’t going pass 15MPH and broke down. Had it towed to mechanic and he told me it was the Catalytic Converter. So I had it repaired at a well-known place in Burbank that’s been around since the 90’s. Then broke down again, once again wasn’t going pass 15MPH October 22, 2022. Then I had it towed to mechanic and he found out the same thing that was happening to my car was a recall with burning oil, burnt piston and engine fried. I had it towed to the dealership in Van Nuys and at this time, I owed $10K for the car and they wanted $9K to fix it. I was devastated because I lost my job due to the car breaking down. I went back and forth with Sandra B in the Legal Department, and I couldn’t get help with the problem. During this time, I was homeless and barely making ends meet financially.

Long story short, I went back-and-forth with Kia Corporate in Irvine, I went back-and-forth with Ally Financial and kept them in the loop since they were financing the car. I ended up getting a job by February, trying to catch up with missed payments, still trying to make ends meet and dealing with your Legal Department. In the meantime, I was accumulating storage fees at the Dealership $75.00 a day, accumulating more debt. I did reach out to the Bureau of Automotive Repair, the lead me to the New Engine Replacement Program in Sacramento, to the New Motor Vehicle Board, to the GAP Insurance to Washington DC Treasury and then in the meantime chatting with people in the Kia Forum on Facebook and finding out about others having the same problems. I reached out to many attorneys, anybody and everybody. Several times told Ally to just come and take the car, while praying I could pay it off and just giving it back to the dealership to cover storage fees. Now that a year has passed and I wasn’t able to pay it off, wasn’t able to get it out of storage, I had it picked up finally after several attempts for the bank getting the run around at the dealership with a few times was told the car was missing or taken. I even found out that State Farm no longer wants to insure people with Kia Souls just because they are known for being stolen due to some Azzhole putting up a Tik-Tok video showing how to steal one. At one point, in March 2023 Sandra B sent over a Corporate Mechanic to see if they can check it as a 2nd opinion, but since Corporations are so adamant on not losing their precious dollars I can’t even trust if it was even done because they were told once the car wasn’t even there. Then, we come to dealerships and their shysters given the Good Will Program Grants to not honoring it to people like me so they know by the end of the year they get to keep that money in their pockets.

Oh yeah, I know how corrupt Corporations work now and going forward, I no longer will buy a Kia or a Hyundai and believe me I’ve been putting it out there with anybody and everybody on how I lost my car, job of 4 ½ years all because of this situation. Now I have to file bankruptcy thanks to KIA. Isn’t it wonderful. Damn, I couldn’t even get the bank to pick-up the car, they didn’t even want it because of the problem.

  7. Nicole Prewitt says:

My car engine fried and the dealership wouldn’t honor the New Engine Replacement Program and while I was homeless, the engine failed and due to this, my job was 26 miles away, so I lost my job and I still owed $10k for the car, so I had the bank pick it up and now that they did that, eventually the collections will come and charge me, because since I didn’t have the money to fix it, I didn’t have the money to get it out of a years worth of storage at the dealership, so not sure how much I’ll owe. It’s all a waiting game now, and people are encouraging me to file Bankruptcy due to all of this.

  8. Angela E Houston says:

add me. My 2012 Kia Sportage’s engine needs to be replaced, now I’m having to rent a vehicle

  9. Sandra Lindeman says:

Add me my Kia 2014 Soul engine needs replaced because of this

    1. Pamela Masters says:

My Kia is sitting because they told me not to drive it as long as the engine light is on. I just paid to have it worked on 300. And it did not work even when they put the parts on my car so now I don’t know what to do . I’m driving my Dads car.

  10. Brandy Reid says:

I have a 2018 Kia Rio and it does out on me all the time. It’s scares me because sometimes I’m on the interstate doing 65 to 70 miles.
