A Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement resolves a class action lawsuit claiming that some of its Kia and Hyundai vehicles suffer from engine defects that can lead to failure.

The Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found in the โ€œWhoโ€™s Eligibleโ€ section below.

According to the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit, the class vehicles suffer from a defect related to the engineโ€™s connecting rod bearing. This bearing can allegedly fail, causing engine seizure, stalling, engine failure and even engine fires โ€” all of which may not be covered by warranty.

Kia is a South Korea-based vehicle company that owns both Hyundai and Kia brands.

Kia hasnโ€™t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the Hyundai class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive out-of-pocket expense reimbursement, compensation for trade-ins and sales, compensation for total vehicle losses, warranty extensions and participate in a rebate program.ย

To be eligible for certain types of compensation โ€” such as for rental car, towing, ride-sharing or other transportation and incidental expenses โ€” under the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, the knock sensor detection software (KSDS) update on the class vehicle must be performed on or before Nov. 4, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Aug. 7, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement was held Sept. 8, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim for most benefits in the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit is July 8, 2024.

  1. Jon Edgar says:

2016 Hyundai Genesis with 3.8L engine. The mechanic said the engine is making noise from the bottom end. (Rod Bering?) 123,000 miles. That may sound like high mileage but Iโ€™ve had Mazdaโ€™s that lasted much longer and for half the price.

  2. Michelle Winston says:

I had a 2014 Kia Soul! And started having issues with acceleration, sputtering, loud squealing type noise when gas pedal was pushed, gas mileage was horrible, put oil in it all the time, and finally the smell of exhaust inside the car. Called the dealership, called the 800 Kia customer service number with everyone telling me the same thing. They have no idea whatโ€™s wrong but bring it to them, which is a 2 hour drive away and I DID NOT feel safe driving it. I still owed money and worked 20 minutes one way from my home in a very rural area. Had no choice but to let the car go back and am now 4 years tied to a newer car when that one was a year and 4 months away from being paid for

    1. G sladek says:

I know buddy, I feel for you..2013 Kia soul Eco, started knocking at 74,000 miles, engine needs to be replaced said mechanic, so I wait for approval document..my car has been there since Feb and still is, only want to give me a 20,000 mile warranty, with new engine, I said no way, so was gonna get a new Kia, only appraised my car for 2900, I said no the appraisal is 8000, said no itโ€™s salvage, itโ€™s not runningโ€ฆI said whoโ€™s fault is that? Contacting Barry Davis channel 5 News get this matter for everyone to see ..every brand Kia they sale has a defect, really sad how they can try to take advantage of it..all lemons

  3. Rhonda Gipson says:

I have a 2017 Hyundai Tucson and I seriously need my car added to the list because weโ€™re adding oil every 1000 miles and itโ€™s like a complete oil change in between oil changes and itโ€™s really ridiculous having to do this and Iโ€™m still paying on it. I really like the car but if you wonโ€™t take care of it I will never purchase one of your vehicles again and I will tell everyone about it so they donโ€™t get suckered in the way I did on buying this car and having to put so much money into it like I have.

  4. Isaac ponce says:

I have a 2017 hyuandai elantra se that were still making payments for it has a blown head gasket overheats like crazy I replaced the coils and spark plugs 3 times already with multiple oil changes the silonoid went out for transmission bought that but couldnโ€™t ever afford to take it to a shop cuz I donโ€™t have that kind of money for labor work so I watched YouTube videos multiple to get a better understanding of what I kneeded to do before going off on the first thing I see but Iโ€™m still having issues I just donโ€™t wanna have to take apart the whole darn engine just to change a gasket and while learning new things and trying to remember how it all goes back without fn up some how along the way being that I live in a appt complex so itโ€™s hard to any type of work around this bit. Anyway would I be eligible or heโ€™ll no

  5. Jenni says:

I have a 2018 kia Rio and I keep having to add oil to my car please add my car to the list

    1. Conchetta law says:

      What about 2014 Kia Sorrento?

  6. LaTanya Jones says:

    Hello,

I have a 2019 Hyundai Sonata which has been burning a lot of oil after I get an oil change the oil is gone in two the stick is dry. This has been going on for the past three years. I even paid over $500 for an oil pan that they told me at the Sheehy Hyundai Dealership that it had a small hairline crack in it and two weeks after that my oil light was coming on again and when I checked my oil stick it was DRY again. So I have just been putting oil in my car myself until I saw this on my iPhone this morning. Thank you so much for putting this out there for others to see. I just want my car fix and my money back because I didnโ€™t and I donโ€™t have a leak in my pan either. I donโ€™t have and have not had any oil on the ground of my garage or my driveway either. I brought this car brand new what a waste. I will NEVER buy another Hyundai ever again and I will be telling other not to buy one either.
PLEASE ADD ME TO LIST PLEASE.
If I donโ€™t hear from someone in the next weeks I will be reaching out to my local TV station in the Washington, DC area.

  7. Zach says:

2016 kia sorento has a theta II engine and yet itโ€™s not on the list. Just had mine replaced this time last year because like every other model this engine is in, it consumes oil. Complete trash.

    1. Kayla D Lonas says:

What was the issues it was having? My son has had the worse luck with his just got it in July

  8. Kimleftrick says:

    I have a 2017 Hyundai elantra

  9. Trina Jacquillard says:

Good luck with KIA reimbursing you for anything! On Dec. 11, 2020 took car to be serviced to be told had to left and left with no way home (no loaner vehicle either). Forced to pay rental which ended up during Covid Enterprise rents me out a vehicle that should have never left their lot (cause it was wrecked) I luckily made it home but returned it next day scared to drive it back but wasted $100.00 so for 31 days no vehicle over the holidays & life in chaos I finally get call on January 12,2021 to pick mine up at the end of their work day told motor didnโ€™t need replacement. Sign paperwork and leave. Well I donโ€™t make it halfway down a major Highway and Iโ€™m lucky I didnโ€™t wreck, die or injure any other drivers when motor fully seized up at 60 mph with no โ€ผ๏ธ warning. Now Iโ€™m screwed again having to call my insurance company costing me another $250 for an emergency tow to have vehicle towed back to KIA dealership but first gotta freeze my arse off in 18 degree weather with no heat not dressed for it for 4 hours waiting on a tow truck!!! Then I have to get a way home again and figure out rental car situation again!!! What did KIA pay for??? A rebuilt motor in the endโ€ฆ. Thatโ€™s it!!!

  10. Phil says:

I am surprised KIA has not issued a recall or extended warranty for the 2016 Accent. They KNOW this model has excessive oil consumption and the engine can stall and cut off at any time but they refuse to issue a recall. This is a potentially fatal flaw in their product. If anyone has additional info on this and what we can do please let me know. Thank you
