A Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement resolves a class action lawsuit claiming that some of its Kia and Hyundai vehicles suffer from engine defects that can lead to failure.

The Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found in the โ€œWhoโ€™s Eligibleโ€ section below.

According to the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit, the class vehicles suffer from a defect related to the engineโ€™s connecting rod bearing. This bearing can allegedly fail, causing engine seizure, stalling, engine failure and even engine fires โ€” all of which may not be covered by warranty.

Kia is a South Korea-based vehicle company that owns both Hyundai and Kia brands.

Kia hasnโ€™t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the Hyundai class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive out-of-pocket expense reimbursement, compensation for trade-ins and sales, compensation for total vehicle losses, warranty extensions and participate in a rebate program.ย

To be eligible for certain types of compensation โ€” such as for rental car, towing, ride-sharing or other transportation and incidental expenses โ€” under the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, the knock sensor detection software (KSDS) update on the class vehicle must be performed on or before Nov. 4, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Aug. 7, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement was held Sept. 8, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim for most benefits in the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit is July 8, 2024.

  1. Tina says:

I bought my first car it was a 2004 kia Rio. I paid it off 2 years early and coming home from work on new years eve it just died had it towed and that when I found out timing chain broke. And car was ruined it had 89000 miles when I called about warranty was told after I paid it off it wasnโ€™t covered. This has been the down fall of my life

  2. Pam Kuehn says:

April 2023 -we bought a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe XL w/6 cylinder engine. gave it an oil change in June, 2023. engine seized July 2023 and is dead with Hyundai saying the VIN # is not on thereโ€™ll list as it is a 6 cylinder and not a 4 cylinder. We are screwed out of a car!!! what can we do???

  3. Danny says:

Had a Kia forte the engine caught fire I mailed in all the proof including video link and police report but was denied just because the vin number wasnโ€™t recalled, a huge disservice and disappointment being a person what was really impacted by this.

    1. Tiffany B says:

I too had a kia that caught fire. The firemen said a rod wemt through the engine. I obvisiouly no longer have the vehicle it was burnt and completly totaled. So i guess the people like us that lost there vehicle due to fire because of the problem are just screwed even more! Ill never buy a kia again thats for sure!

  4. Maria says:

Currently own a 2017 Tuscon, have owned a 2010 Elantra and 2013 Elantra, have recommended customers who bought from Hyundai and all with that said, experienced an engine failure when my oil was changed, thought I was getting a new engine but turned out it was a used engine, Hyundai needs to stand by their customers more than they do, we as consumers have no idea what is or isnโ€™t being done when their done until something happens. This is why there are so many complaints.

  5. Shawanda Hunter says:

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, no issues other than the occasional Active Airflap System error message, took it to the dealership and no one could tell me what this meant or how to fix it. This year I had this weird revving regardless of my foot being on the gas or not, the car cut off at an intersection and I was able to restart the car and get to work. I parked the car thinking it was a one-time event and if I turned it off for some time Iโ€™d be ok. I went into my office and reported what was happening with my car and the possibility of my needing to wfh. I went back to my car after about an hour car turned out but it didnโ€™t sound like the engine started, I attempted to shift into park, reverse, neutral to see if the car would respond and nothing every light on the dash that could possibly light up didโ€ฆ I had the car towed to my local mechanic and he performed a diagnostic test and got an hybrid battery service warning. I called and scheduled an appointment with the dealership and got an appointment in February-it was January 11th. I finally received a call March 3rd stating the engine was seized but I had a warranty to cover if I could provide proof of consistent maintenance. Replacement approved, I received another call in April stating the active air flap system needed to be replaced because the car still wouldnโ€™t start. I approved the replacement. The invoice reported all parts replaced and car was driven and no issues were present. I went to pick up my car and when I started it the maintenance light illuminates and never goes off I ask the tech what could be the cause and I was told โ€œI donโ€™t know, you donโ€™t know how to clear it?โ€ Evidently if I did I wouldnโ€™t have asked. I was told to drive the car home and hopefully the light would clear on its own. I had to take my son to a program the next morning so I figured thatโ€™d be the test. By the time I got to my sons program the car had started the weird revving again. I attempted to drive the car back home and after about 15 minutes the car started this weird jerking if I accelerated over 15 mph, this is not even 16 hours later Iโ€™m calling the dealership because I was concerned and worried I wouldnโ€™t make it home. No answer, so I called a tow and had the car taken back to the dealership. After another 2 months I received a call stating my transmission was shotโ€ฆ How? Itโ€™s been 11 months since Iโ€™ve last drove my car and now facing a $5500 expense to replace the transmission.

  6. Nathan Alexander says:

Is the 2016 Hyundai Sonata SE are part of the class action

  7. Jeffrey Hatfield says:

We own a 2012 KIA Optima Hybrid that had โ€œissuesโ€ and it was the transmission. Dealership tried to charge me for the replacement but I remembered reading a recall for the same issue and thus new transmission was granted and installed free of charge. It took several hours of calling people and moving up the โ€œflag poleโ€ to persons of authority but go it done.

  8. Lynise Rowe says:

I have a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport I had to use my extended warranty for this engine failure and I need to be reimbursed, also unfortunately my Kia Sorento was a 2014 and this ad only calls for all years up to 2013. I purchased the suv with a oil consumption problem that was sold to me by the Kia Dealer in Valencia, CA. drove it a whole year before I found out and traded it in for a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport which had to replace the engine like what gives??!!

  9. Alenka says:

I have santa Fe XL that has engine failure looking for class action for this bigger engine

I have a 2017 Kia Sorento 6 cylinder GDI engine that is experiencing the same issues as described here. It just crossed the 100,000 mile mark and is no longer covered. The car was down 4 quarts of oil before the check engine light came on. There was an excessive amount of metal shaving in the oil. Not sure if we can save the engine at this point. Will the settlement cover other Kia models any time soon?
