A Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement resolves a class action lawsuit claiming that some of its Kia and Hyundai vehicles suffer from engine defects that can lead to failure.

The Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found in the โ€œWhoโ€™s Eligibleโ€ section below.

According to the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit, the class vehicles suffer from a defect related to the engineโ€™s connecting rod bearing. This bearing can allegedly fail, causing engine seizure, stalling, engine failure and even engine fires โ€” all of which may not be covered by warranty.

Kia is a South Korea-based vehicle company that owns both Hyundai and Kia brands.

Kia hasnโ€™t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the Hyundai class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive out-of-pocket expense reimbursement, compensation for trade-ins and sales, compensation for total vehicle losses, warranty extensions and participate in a rebate program.ย

To be eligible for certain types of compensation โ€” such as for rental car, towing, ride-sharing or other transportation and incidental expenses โ€” under the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, the knock sensor detection software (KSDS) update on the class vehicle must be performed on or before Nov. 4, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Aug. 7, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement was held Sept. 8, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim for most benefits in the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit is July 8, 2024.

  1. Natasha Brazil says:

Why is the 2011 Hyundai accent gls not listed? My engine seized up breaking timing belt and of course being an interference engine, car in motion, the block was totalled. I had to replace my engine and pay for all the fluids and belts and hoses for a dry rebuilt engine and labor costs for removal of old engine and installation of new engine. It. Took almost a full year to come up with funds to pay for this horrible inconvenience and almost left me homeless and cost me my self employment earnings since I had no ride.

  2. Darrin Williams Bauford says:

I โ€œhadโ€ a 2015 Hyundai Elantra drove to church one morning and after service the engine went out and the transmission didnโ€™t go into โ€œdrive gearโ€. Had it towed paid diagnostic fee of $60.00 all the codes came back โ€œinternal engine component failureโ€ and the extended warranty was a waste of money DIDNโ€T cover anything.

  3. Dorothy Range says:

    2017 Hyundai Elantra
    2018 Kia Optima

  4. L B says:

My 2013 Hyundai sante fe 6 cyl lost power while I was driving, it was very scary and dangerous. Made it to the dealer who diagnosed and told me the engine has failed and will need a complete engine replacement at only 104,000 miles! They said it consumed oil and was down 3 Qts. Car was regularly maintained at same dealer and was not due for oil change for many miles yet. Iโ€™m reading that many others have also experienced engine failure as well due to defective Hyundai engines. .

  5. DEBBIE CONCIALDI says:

I have a 2011 Kia Sorento, all the lights, abs, downhill traction, and sometime engine light come on, also been stalling and will not go sometimes. Changes the crank shaft sensor, still stalls any suggestions, I think its the mass air flow sensor??

  6. Dale Hille says:

My 2016 Kia Optima started having 3ngine issues, limp mode, code for knock sensor. Wonโ€™t go over 20mph,2000rpms. Havenโ€™t driven for almost 3 weeks. Kia canโ€™t get to my car til 24th of October. I found a coupon on their website for a rental/loaner car 100% complimentary on them. This vehicle has presented the same engine issues like the rest have. Afraid to tow it to the dealership and be stranded 25mi plus away from home with no loaner/rental car. Help me.

  7. Angela Mitchell says:

I have a 2015 Hyundai Tucson that had a crank shaft put it and a motor.

    1. SHARON SPENCER says:

I just spent 6,000 dollars for a engine and labor. I have a 2015 Hyundai Tuscon Limited. A true inconvenience, put me down along side of the road. Thank God I want in the middle of rush hour traffic.

  8. Erin Willman says:

My 2015 Kia optima SXL turbo is throwing code P1326, P2565, P2562, P0128, P0133, PO106 in that order. It started with the P1326 code and went into limp mode and at that point all the other codes appeared as well. Theyโ€™ve tested my car twice and said that it passed the knock sensor test. First time they sent the car back with a whole list of repairs that my car needed totaling over $6000, that I was responsible for of course. And three weeks later they sent the car back to me with an estimate of over $4000 because now they say that the the turbo has failed. but just three weeks priorโ€ฆ.the turbo was just fine and I didnโ€™t drive it in between the two visits to the Kia dealership because it is in limp mode. The paperwork says, and I quote โ€œrecommend replacing turbo, then retest for any other damaged components.โ€ as if theyโ€™re already seeing into the future and know that there will be โ€œotherโ€ damaged components. And of course, theyโ€™ve will be at my expense as well. Anything they can do to avoid replacing the engine & the cost being put on them. I had my car for six months when I purchased it from the dealership, before I started having issues with it. Over the last two years, Iโ€™ve continued to put Band-Aids on issues that arose because Kia would never take responsibility for their defect. I am a single mother who relies on on this vehicle for income and transportation, for my two daughters, one of which is special needs. It is a shame how they are treating their customers, itโ€™s a damn shame!

    1. Mark says:

      Sue Kia.

  9. Timothy Bell says:

I have a 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T that has the Theta 2 engine in it but my vehicle isnโ€™t listed in the vehicles effected

  10. Sharnell says:

Why is the 2015 KIA Sorento not listed. My engine when out on a road trip w/ My family. KIA tells me after the fact it was a recall. I never received any info about the recall

    1. Daphen Daniels says:

The mail came late for the lawsuit papers that I had and I donโ€™t know did the paper get to the company. My Kia soul caught on fire it was a 2016
