A Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement resolves a class action lawsuit claiming that some of its Kia and Hyundai vehicles suffer from engine defects that can lead to failure.

The Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found in the โ€œWhoโ€™s Eligibleโ€ section below.

According to the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit, the class vehicles suffer from a defect related to the engineโ€™s connecting rod bearing. This bearing can allegedly fail, causing engine seizure, stalling, engine failure and even engine fires โ€” all of which may not be covered by warranty.

Kia is a South Korea-based vehicle company that owns both Hyundai and Kia brands.

Kia hasnโ€™t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the Hyundai class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive out-of-pocket expense reimbursement, compensation for trade-ins and sales, compensation for total vehicle losses, warranty extensions and participate in a rebate program.ย

To be eligible for certain types of compensation โ€” such as for rental car, towing, ride-sharing or other transportation and incidental expenses โ€” under the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, the knock sensor detection software (KSDS) update on the class vehicle must be performed on or before Nov. 4, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Aug. 7, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement was held Sept. 8, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim for most benefits in the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit is July 8, 2024.

  1. Gary Heller says:

I had a 2013 Kia Soul that I lost money on when I traded it in.

  2. Robin Kelly says:

I have a 2016 Kia Optima that the engine failed. The dealer quoted me 6 months to replace it. I took it to a 3rd party who replaced it in 3 weeks. When I filed a claim I was told the 3rd party claims were closed and my claim denied. Problem is my engine failed after the Claims closed so I couldnt file a claim. I am out 6,000 for the engine and my car rental costs

  3. Brian Adams says:

I have a 2010 Sanota it has mileage but the engine does use oil. Once in a while during esseleration it will smoke accessive clouds of burning oil! Iโ€™ve been a mechanic for 30 years! Iโ€™m puzzled? Never seen nothing like it because itโ€™s not happening every time!!!

  4. Craig Griffin says:

2012 accet gs 1.6 gdi. Same engine as veloster. Purchased 01/2023- 99k miles. Changed oil/filter immediately so I would know when next service is due. Checked oil level at 500 miles, was low. Began topping off once a week, and also changed oil/filter every 3k miles.
Continued this up to 120k miles. At whick point it developed light tick. The light tick became a serious knock within 100 miles of stary of tickingโ€ฆCode for knock censor came up when check engine light finally came on. Had censor replaced, and was told check eng. Light should have came on when or before the small tick even started? Metal flakes all in oil, and rod bearing is bad. I need a new motor, and why is the 2012 accent gs 1.6 gdi not included on the recall? 1st year using 1.6gdi in hyundai vehicles. Same engine as 2012 veloster which is included. Also never received any notice of knock sensor update recall???? Total. B.S.. emailed hyundai America and was told to have dealership diagnose problem, and I would be responsible for all cost to fix including towing to dealership. Terrible news, for a broke guy. Still owe 5700 on it too. FML Hyundai!!

  5. Brittanie Power says:

2015 Hyundai sonata just replaced the engine In may with only 127k miles on it would I qualify ?

  6. Bill Codner says:

Dealer in Rome GA quickly as they could, replaced my engine in a 2016 Sonata SE gratus with 133,000 miles. It had a defect grinding up the cam. The car runs like new but Iโ€™m not sure for how long. Iโ€™ve been driving Sonatas since 2006 and this was my first major problem.

  7. Michele Youtz says:

I have only had troubles with my 2006 kia Sorento I have put so much money in it for years I know it is old but it only has a little over 70 thousand miles on it itโ€™s had a engine light on forever my mechanic can not figure out what is going on could it have a issue as well that needs to be addressed by the recall?

  8. Donnie Dixon says:

I have 2018 kia optima s motor is bad

  9. Stephanie Soule says:

I just purchased a 2024 Kia Sportage with major ABS brake problems. The brakes went out entirely on less than a two week old car that I had just purchased new. Kia is now claiming that they need to keep my car for what will be close to a month while they call and corporate to analyze the problem that they had never seen in the 2024 model and mine was the first probably of many to come apparently, this was a problem with previous years. Sounds like a new class action lawsuit me.

  10. Becky claffey says:

My 2012 Kia has had 2 engines replaced
