A Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement resolves a class action lawsuit claiming that some of its Kia and Hyundai vehicles suffer from engine defects that can lead to failure.

The Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found in the โ€œWhoโ€™s Eligibleโ€ section below.

According to the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit, the class vehicles suffer from a defect related to the engineโ€™s connecting rod bearing. This bearing can allegedly fail, causing engine seizure, stalling, engine failure and even engine fires โ€” all of which may not be covered by warranty.

Kia is a South Korea-based vehicle company that owns both Hyundai and Kia brands.

Kia hasnโ€™t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the Hyundai class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive out-of-pocket expense reimbursement, compensation for trade-ins and sales, compensation for total vehicle losses, warranty extensions and participate in a rebate program.ย

To be eligible for certain types of compensation โ€” such as for rental car, towing, ride-sharing or other transportation and incidental expenses โ€” under the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, the knock sensor detection software (KSDS) update on the class vehicle must be performed on or before Nov. 4, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Aug. 7, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement was held Sept. 8, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim for most benefits in the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit is July 8, 2024.

I have a 2014 KIA Cadenza and having problems with they are replacing the timing Chain my car is at the dealer now, my car also is burning oil, I had my oil change and in lest then 2 months my car was 4qt low and the car was making this cracking sound. The dealer do not want to take care of the problems stating that I have an old car what do I expect. I need to know what to do. I had another shop look at the car and they stated that my engine is messed up and KIA dealer sated that they do not know what they are talking about. Kia is charging me 200.00 dollars to replace a cup lit in the steering wheel the part cost .28 cent and making me pay for two diagnostic on the car. I need help.

    1. Jessica L Phillips says:

The coupler should be fixed under recall. At least mine wasโ€ฆ I have a 2013 Kia Optima, Iโ€™ve had my motor replaced after it broke down on me while I was 8 months pregnant, ended up getting my car back righ before my water broke and i gave birth to my son. I got the knock sensor replaced, but now my snow white pearl paint is peeling Iโ€™m so pissed off with this car company itโ€™s unreal!!! I will NEVER buy another kia in my life, and you can bet that Iโ€™ll also tell everyone I know not to buy a Kia!

  2. Deroddric Johnson says:

My name is Deroddric Johnson and I have a 2019 jua soul itโ€™s burning oil no oil leaks no where and iam still paying notes on it so can someone tell what do I sui to do 478 7033294 my number

  3. Emory says:

I have a 2013 Kia Optima that does qualify but Rusty Wallace Kia Louisville Tennessee put a motor in when previous owner had it 11/08/2018 and I have all the paperwork the motor now has 82,000 that they put in and is using a quart of oil every 100-200 miles I took it to dealership and they said it needed engine flush that I paid $1360.00 but all they did was change spark plugs and oil and used thicker oil than is recommended for the car after I got it back I took it back the next day and told the service manager Nick Johnson it was doing the same thing he came out looked and said it is definitely smoking and he would contact his mechanic department and never called me back 2 weeks later I called him and he said there was nothing else they could do.I got pulled over by local police and the office said not to have it back on the road because of all the smoke that it looked like it was on fire I called Kia and they still have not did anything. Please let me know what I should do all I ever wanted was the car to run correctly and before I bought it called the Dealership and they said it had a lifetime warranty on the engine and now they want do anything as I said I have all documents since the motor was put in 2018. Please someone help lead me who I need to get ahold of.

  4. Kelly McMinn says:

    What about 2006 kia 4/4 4door ?

  5. Kira says:

2017 Sonata Limited-I believe my engine is on its way out. Excessive oil use but i have to come out of pocket for an oil consumption test per corporate but dealership said its a waste. Oil will still burn. I was told there is a lifetime warranty on the engine but they will not replace the engine until the engine is damn near gone. Now Iโ€™m starting to smell burnt oil fumes in my car. This has been going on for about a year now. Who wants to buy a Hyundai or Kia with all the theft going on and insurance companies do not want to ensure these cars.

    1. Hank Pearce says:

First, the dealer will update your anti theft software to fix that issue so you can provide proof to the insurance co. Second, the dealer just replaced the engine in my daughterโ€™s 2015 Sonata Sport sedan at 150k mileage due to excessive oil burning after several attempts to flush & treat the oil to slow consumption which was not effective. They replaced it bc she is the original owner & her car was only serviced at the dealership since purchase. So far the replacement is performing well. The original engine has a 100k mile warranty which was extended on the affected vehicles to 120k for original owners only I believe, but not lifetimeโ€ฆhope this helps & good luck on it.

  6. Michelle Sweeney says:

My Kia started having motor issues the dealer couldnโ€™t figure out the problem. They replaced my motor with no cost & a free rental. I just wonder about the qualty of the replacement motor.

  7. Philllip Allums says:

I have a 2017 Kia Sportage EX and I have been having a problem with my oil change lasting up to 5000 miles. It is always starting to knock when I get to 3000 miles. I also hear a rattling sound in the rear of the vehicle???

  8. Melissa turner says:

My vehicle has been at hyundai dealer with this issue since February for this very reason and hyundai denied fixing it

  9. Jim Callaway says:

2017 Hyundia Santa Fe loses a quart of oil a week. Been to dealer and they say itโ€™s normal. Was told to sell car.

    1. Hank Pearce says:

That is a joke! Itโ€™s not normal, see my reply to Kira above & read up on the entire lawsuit.

  10. Philip Johnson says:

My 2020 Kia Sportage head is into replaced in the light still on here is no good I need my car fixed or my money back

    1. Joseph T Barlow says:

My daughterโ€™s 2013 sonata engine failed and the dealership denied her claim but my 2015 sonata engine failed and the dealership i went to replaced with no problem help me make sense of this situation
