A Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement resolves a class action lawsuit claiming that some of its Kia and Hyundai vehicles suffer from engine defects that can lead to failure.

The Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found in the โ€œWhoโ€™s Eligibleโ€ section below.

According to the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit, the class vehicles suffer from a defect related to the engineโ€™s connecting rod bearing. This bearing can allegedly fail, causing engine seizure, stalling, engine failure and even engine fires โ€” all of which may not be covered by warranty.

Kia is a South Korea-based vehicle company that owns both Hyundai and Kia brands.

Kia hasnโ€™t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the Hyundai class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive out-of-pocket expense reimbursement, compensation for trade-ins and sales, compensation for total vehicle losses, warranty extensions and participate in a rebate program.ย

To be eligible for certain types of compensation โ€” such as for rental car, towing, ride-sharing or other transportation and incidental expenses โ€” under the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, the knock sensor detection software (KSDS) update on the class vehicle must be performed on or before Nov. 4, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Aug. 7, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement was held Sept. 8, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim for most benefits in the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit is July 8, 2024.

  1. Jamie Nichols says:

I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata that is on its 4th replacement motor right now. Iโ€™ve spent so much money on it and so much of the time Iโ€™ve had it, itโ€™s just been a driveway ornament. I bought this car used, when itโ€™s 3rd motor gave out. And on top of how many times itโ€™s been replaced, those motors are impossible to find used at a junk yard or anywhere for under $3000 dollars. They are rediculously expensive and I live on a fixed income, my money is limited, I canโ€™t just pay 3000 dollars every 6 months. To top it off, my car has blue link that still hasnโ€™t been set up for me to use itโ€ฆ. itโ€™s a headache.

  2. max zuniga says:

I have hyundai s0nata 2017 and hyundai replace the engine block ,received a check for towing, hotel and car rental i did not have any problem to get my money back.

  3. N Jackson says:

Same submitted all the paperwork for Kia then they say itโ€™s not complete. They have been giving me the run around for the past year.

  4. Joey Right says:

You guys are really stupid, Kia does not own Hyundai, Hyundai is the parent company of Kia because they acquired majority stock in 1998 after Kia files for bankruptcy in 1997. Do some research before looking stupid on the internet.

    1. Cannon says:

You call them stupid, itโ€™s so unnecessary. If they were smart, they wouldnโ€™t buy a KIA or Hyundai .

      1. Steve says:

Iโ€™ve been driving my 2012 Kia Optima SXTGDI Since it was new. It now has 304,000 miles on it now and still looks and rides perfectly. I have a warranty on my shortblock good for unlimited miles. Hyundai and Kia vehicles are very well built a d offer the best warranty on the market.

        1. M Guinther says:

My plan was to drive my 2012 Sorento til it died of natural causes. I had the engine replacement about 100k and was T boned at 170k.
The engine was going strong, no oil burning. However all airbags except the steering wheel deployed. Totaled.
Broke my heart. It was a 2 row Sorento with alot of storage. Now itโ€™s only 3 row Sorento.

  5. Lennox Howe says:

I have a 2015 Kia Sorento and the engine failed still waiting for my rental reimbursement

  6. Kathleen says:

I have a 2014 Kia Sorento. Needed to replace engine last year. Kept up with all maintenance

  7. K. Ruth Seaber says:

I have been dealing with rental reimbursement for over a year now. (2013 Hyundai Tucson; knock engine sensor failure; engine replacedโ€“at dealership from Feb. 15, 2023 through April 26, 2023). Every time I send Hyundai all the documents they request, they say I sent the wrong form or the receipt needs more documentation on it or something similar. This has been going on for over a year. Now theyโ€™re saying they canโ€™t reimburse the rental expenses because the address for the โ€œrental car companyโ€ (Iโ€™ve told them repeatedly and documented via letter and invoice and receipt and rental agreement that I rented a car from a real estate company my son owns) shows up as a swing set company when they google it. The address is for a building that houses several companies, which Iโ€™ve also explained to them.
The long and short of itโ€“every timeโ€“Every. Single. Time.โ€“ I get all the documentation they ask for, Hyundai changes the rules and says they need more info or this or that isnโ€™t right. This can be nothing be delay tactics to wear me out so they donโ€™t have to pay. Iโ€™ve contacted the Missouri Attorney Generalโ€™s Consumer Complaint Division, and their letters were ignored for the first 60 days. What else can I do???

  8. Rigsbee George says:

Cars are junk ,Hyundai does not care about fixing the issue, if they did problem would have been fixed years ago ,problem is an ongoing issue and there appears to be no end in sight

  9. Cathy downum says:

I have a 2015 soul which never seems to be qualified either. It burns oil damn near like gas. Shouldnโ€™t that be some kind of recall massive oil burning? And I donโ€™t know which engine I have in my car how do I find that out, on this last suit. All I know is Iโ€™ll still be paying on a car for 3 years that wonโ€™t be running that infuriates me Iโ€™m disabled I canโ€™t walk to appointments. What do I do 7

  10. Autumn Alston says:

why arenโ€™t my vehical included? My 2017 Hyundai Accent back in Febuary 2023, the engine began knocking the lost power and the engine shout down. I had to have it towed to my dadโ€™s house. The engine is blown from engine failure. I had just had it service a month earlier. Itโ€™s the same engine thatโ€™s in other Hyundai cars but I donโ€™t see that they encluded the Accent. Why is that? have you looked into the problems with the Hyundai Accent engines?
