A Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement resolves a class action lawsuit claiming that some of its Kia and Hyundai vehicles suffer from engine defects that can lead to failure.

The Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found in the “Who’s Eligible” section below.

According to the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit, the class vehicles suffer from a defect related to the engine’s connecting rod bearing. This bearing can allegedly fail, causing engine seizure, stalling, engine failure and even engine fires — all of which may not be covered by warranty.

Kia is a South Korea-based vehicle company that owns both Hyundai and Kia brands.

Kia hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the Hyundai class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive out-of-pocket expense reimbursement, compensation for trade-ins and sales, compensation for total vehicle losses, warranty extensions and participate in a rebate program.

To be eligible for certain types of compensation — such as for rental car, towing, ride-sharing or other transportation and incidental expenses — under the Hyundai class action lawsuit settlement, the knock sensor detection software (KSDS) update on the class vehicle must be performed on or before Nov. 4, 2023.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Aug. 7, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the Kia and Hyundai engine lawsuit settlement was held Sept. 8, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim for most benefits in the Kia and Hyundai class action lawsuit is July 8, 2024.

@Matt p. I’m still financing the 2016 model. Been running PERFECT last 3 years. Started at 27k. Real time 67k. I’m afraid this Theta ll engine is going to explode. I still owe 10k. Thanks Matt p.

    1. Duane Hill says:

      Help!

    2. Sherri Coulibaly says:

I have a 2017 Kia Sportage. A few months ago the engine light came on. The car stalled and was not drivable. The Dealership did not do a oil check or contact Kia when fixing the knock sensor. No oil consumption test completed. I go to get my oil check either weekly or biweekly and the oil is gone. This has been going on for at least 4-5 months. HELP! I have reported this to Kia

  2. Angelina Pitts says:

My 2012 was fine then all of a sudden it started knocking and I couldn’t drive faster than 60 mph I then called AAA to take my 2012 Hyundai Tucson to the dealership the mechanics said it was the recall ( now saying warranty) of motor knocking and all they had approved it until David Rodriguez from corporate denied my claim I sent them my oil changes and kept up with maintenance my scan ups were to
Omar Alvero ( who was gonna approve it) until David Rodriguez saw I had 165,000 miles on it and denied it cause of milage ,I have called corporate several times , and they denied me just because of what David put about the milage , who can I contact about the lawsuit? All I want is my car fixed and running the way it was

  3. Maria l sanchez says:

Maria l sanchez. Smoke, stalling, naking, seizure. Never able to acelérate to 80 miles.

  4. Dave and Patty Jenkins says:

We own a 2017 KIA Sorrento, we’ve had nothing but engine trouble with it! Stalls going down the road at 45 MPH, KIA Dealership put a new engine in it in November 2022. Still stalls going down the road! Why isn’t this model and year included in the Class Action Suit?

    1. Nathaniel Richardson says:

The same here I spent so much money on mines we thought somebody put sugar in the tank after he found out the motor was bad I had spent out so I had to let it go back a motor was $8000 plus labor and my wife loved her Kia Sorento

    2. Patty says:

Try a cam shaft position sensor. Amazon part was $24.99. Friend installed. But my KIA Sportage was stalling, engine light on & off, running like it only have 2 cylinders. Dealer charged $2000 to fix, and it wasn’t fixed. Next trip they told me I needed a battery, nothing wrong though. Good luck. Sad they won’t stand by their vehicles.

  5. DIANA PUTNAM says:

I had a 2014 Hyundai Veloster, up to about three months ago. About around June of 2023, I had to replace the motor, I drove home parked the car,. Went to get in the next morning wouldn’t stop. My son is a mechanic, he looked at it, and say the motor seized up. Anyways I got a motor, paid for the parts and he replaced it. I don’t have a paper for the things I did. How can I prove this and get done if my money back. Thank you.

    1. Wanda Beall says:

I have a 2015 Forta I have not had to take it in but it doesn’t run right now I am not sure what to do, if my engine goes I will not have a car, would I qualify for the class action lawsuit

  6. Suella Harvey aka Suella Merrill says:

What actually is the car doing mine seems to hesitate alot

  7. Maria Perez says:

I own a 2012 Kia forte it’s always been acting crazy especially when it rains it try’s to turn off , it has an acceleration problem on and off. Steering wheel locks sometimes as I’m about to turn it gets hard and stiff even my shift gear sometimes gets stuck as I’m about to turn off the car now recently my a/c has been acting up one minute blows cool air the next it’s hot because the button for a/c comes on and turns off this happens when the car has been off and I start in the morning I turn a/c on and blows hot and after car has been on a long while it starts cooling again after the a/c buttons light up. Don’t really know what’s happening if it’s electrical problems or something else but it worries me I have kids and don’t want a fire or anything else to happen. They should have a free inspection at the dealerships to help out but if I qualify I will fill out the form anyways and see.

    1. Rebecca Templeton says:

2017 Hyundai Tucson, engine blew. Dealership had my vehicle for 6 months, was difficult to get a straight answer. This caused hardship to my family. Would like to receive compensation for losses.

  9. Crystal says:

It’s the 2014 & 2015 kia Sorento as well you sure did miss a lot of the vehicles what about the ones you didn’t list that had engine failure that cost people thousands like it did me. I have proof of you saying you put in a new engine and then it went out yet again I have the proof of the rod bearings being issued and everything? What do our families do for compensation of those? Say silent so you don’t have to pay for those big mistakes as well? You made billions of dollars off all of us and alot of us having to purchase new vehicles only after having them a few years biggest mistake ever never again $35,000 waste of my time and money what customer service do you have as well it’s horrible. You don’t even stand by your products you point the blame at the driver’s its the worst Toyota is where I’ll be going and telling everyone to go. People are already finding out and you will lose more and more customers over the years I promise. Word of mouth is the best advertisement and you lost a lot of buyers this year from people I’ve spread the word to that they will not be happy with kia.

    1. Dave and Patty Jenkins says:

We have the same problem with our 2017 Sorrento!

      1. Salvatore Ciarametaro says:

Our 2017 Sorento has trans issues but this has a 3.0 V6. Engine is fine

  10. Matt p says:

Get your facts right!!. BEFORE YOU START SPREADING MIS INFORMATION. HYUNDAI MOTORS OWNS HYUNDAI, KIA, GENNIS.

YOU HAVE FAILED TO NAME THE KIA OPTIMA. NOT THE HYBRID BUT THE 2.4 AS ALSO BEING IN THE GROUP OF DEFECTED CARS. POOR journalism!!!!!

    1. Linda Barnett says:

I bought a 2017 Hyeon day Senada SE with the 2.4 didn’t even have it three weeks and ended up with the light came on. I took it down to bed and check right away misfire bank three I took it back to the dealer we’re they’ve had it for over a month and they can’t even figure it out. I’m going to I’ve been able to find online is it’s a junk car they need to replace the entire car in the dealership is screwing around. I’m fed up then I they didn’t tell me beforehand that it was on the top list of cars to be ripped off you can’t hardly get insurance without peeing out the nose, I deserve to be compensated for all my anguish being stuck without a running vehicle and having a dealer rip you off

    2. Fuck that says:

Yea, I have a non-hybrid 18 Kia Optima LX 2.4 with that engine and have already confirmed its under recall. Already had the software updated. Hope the knock sensor needs replacing and then whatever else that makes me get a free engine replacement 😀
