Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures video privacy $16M class action settlement

Sony Pictures and Crunchyroll have reached a $16 million nationwide video privacy class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that they shared subscribers’ personal information with third-party companies such as Facebook, Google, Adobe and others without consent.

The settlement class is made up of those who were registered users of and viewed videos on a website, mobile app or any video-on-demand service or app owned or controlled by Crunchyroll.

Crunchyroll was accused of violating the Video Privacy Protection Act by disclosing the personal information of users, subscribers and viewers to third-party companies. That personal information can include information on if a specific person requested or obtained specific video materials or services from Crunchyroll. 

Crunchyroll is a video service where users can watch anime, manga and episodes of shows soon after they debut in Japan. The website requires a subscription for ad-free viewing on its app, website or video-on-demand service.

Class counsel estimates that consumers who submit valid claim forms will receive $30 apiece from the $16 million settlement; a fee award and awards for the class representatives will also come out of the gross settlement amount.

The fund will also pay for attorneys’ fees and any class administration expenses.

The exclusion and objection deadline is Nov. 27, 2023.

A final fairness hearing in the Sony Pictures and Crunchyroll class action lawsuit settlement will take place Dec. 19, 2023.

The claim form deadline is Dec. 12, 2023.

Who’s Eligible

Those who were registered users of and viewed videos on a website, mobile app or any video-on-demand service or app owned or controlled by Crunchyroll.

Class members will need a class member ID that they were emailed in order to fill out a form and will need to provide the email address associated with the Crunchyroll subscription.
