CenturyLink has agreed to pay $15.5 million to resolve allegations that they deceived consumers with misleading billing practices.

The settlement benefits consumers who had an account with CenturyLink or one of its operating companies for telephone, internet or television services between Jan. 1, 2014 and Jan. 14, 2020.

Plaintiffs in the CenturyLink class action lawsuits claimed that the company deceptively promised certain rates to consumers, only to charge a higher rate during actual billing.

The CenturyLink class action also claimed customers were billed for unauthorized, undisclosed or improper charges for services or equipment that was not actually applicable.

As a result of these charges, the plaintiffs were allegedly charged much higher costs than expected. These expenses reportedly mounted if plaintiffs chose to terminate their accounts in response to the unfair charges. The plaintiffs claim they were charged termination fees and were even improperly sent to collections without any valid reason.

These practices were reportedly a result of CenturyLink tasking their salespeople with “draconian sales quotas and revenue targets” to be met “through any means necessary.” According to the plaintiffs, “CenturyLink’s chosen business model yielded predictable results by encouraging and rewarding deceptive and other unlawful conduct.”

CenturyLink faced several class action lawsuits which were eventually consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) based in Minnesota federal court.

CenturyLink has not admitted any wrongdoing in the MDL but has agreed to pay $15.5 million to cover Class Member payments, attorneys’ fees, court costs, and plaintiff service awards.

In addition, the company will pay $3 million to cover settlement administration and notice expenses. If costs exceed $3 million, an addition $1 million will be covered equally by CenturyLink and the settlement fund.

Under the settlement, Class Members can collect a flat payment of $30. If Class Members can provide supporting documentation, they can receive up to 40 percent of whatever damage they are claiming.

In order to benefit from the CenturyLink class action settlement, Class Members need to file a valid claim form by June 23, 2020. The deadline for exclusion and objection is also June 23, 2020. The final approval hearing is scheduled for Aug. 27, 2020.

  2. Cathy Lynch says:

Add me web site not working

  3. Janet Hess says:

What do you do if you don’t have an account number from 5 years ago? I did everything online, I’m no longer a customer because the amount I paid didn’t match the amount I was quoted. I can’t log in anymore to get it.

  4. Kelli Hazelwoos says:

Trying to put my account number in and says no such account.
    Help

  5. Courtney Knisley says:

I had this happen years ago. In no way does thirty to forty dollars make up for all of the stress we went through month to month. We had all three services through CenturyLink, and our bill was always higher. Unfortunately, this was so far back, I don’t have the paperwork.

  6. Angie kough says:

Like to be added, been with them all them years. Always had higher amounts!

  7. martha j szyperski says:

The site will not allow me to complete the form.

  8. Roger Myers says:

Centurylink had a “price for life” but every month the bill was incorrect (which was always a higher amount than it should have been, never lower- what are the odds if it was always an error) and every month, I’d have to spend at least 1/2 hr and more to attempt to get it right and every month it would be wrong again! (always over charged, hmm)
Luckily fiber optics came to my neighborhood and I was able to tell them to shove it.
CL fought me, gave me the ol’ runaround when I tried to transfer my landline number which I’d had from before it was centurylink to the fiber optics. (had to get state atty gen consumer affairs involved) I get a landline from them for an extra $5./mo.

  9. anita johnson temple says:

I had internet and cable, and landline phone, which was bundled. once it was time for first payment on the bundled was higher than what I would be paying was much higher’
than I was told I would be paying. it was a MUCH HIGHER that i was told.

    1. Tracy Fitch says:

CenturyLink billed me for services not provided and then sent me to collections. I spoke with someone in corporate who blamed this on an issue with Quest. He said he would take care of it and call off collections. It worked for a while but CenturyLink has again turned me over to collections. How can they get away with type of stuff? They need a huge fine to make them change their ways. Please contact me as I would like to see justice done. Thank you.

  10. Audrey mcdonald says:

I was told the internet service was sold to me “price for life” at $45.00 a month. The first time I called their answer was “it has gone up. I replied that they had sold me the plan for $45.00 a month with the “price for life program”. The second time I called the reason was the charge was for taxes.
