Volkswagen agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that certain Audi vehicles contained defective pistons that caused excessive oil consumption.
The settlement benefits current and former owners and lessees who purchased or leased certain 2012-2014 Audi A4; 2012-2014 Audi A5; 2012-2014 Audi A6; 2012-2014 Audi Q5; 2012-2014 and 2016-2017 Audi TT; and 2015-2017 Audi A3 vehicles in the United States and Puerto Rico. Drivers can check their vehicle VIN on the settlement website to confirm their eligibility.
According to the class action lawsuit, certain Audi vehicles were equipped with defective pistons and piston rings, which caused vehicle engines to consume too much oil. This allegedly caused serious problems for drivers, from frequent oil changes to engine damage due to a lack of oil.
Volkswagen Group is an automotive manufacturer that sells vehicles under various brands, including Audi.
Volkswagen hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum as part of a settlement to resolve the Audi piston oil consumption class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the settlement, current owners and lessees can receive an extended warranty for their vehicles. This extended warranty covers 75% of the repair costs associated with excessive oil consumption (for Audi A4, A5, A6, Q5 and 2012-2014 Audi TT vehicles) or fractured pistons (for Audi A3 and 2016-2017 Audi TT vehicles) for nine years or 90,000 miles. The warranty may also cover up to 100% of engine damage repair costs. Coverage percentages will vary depending on the age and mileage of each vehicle.
Former owners and lessees who had to pay out of pocket to repair excessive oil consumption (for Audi A4, A5, A6, Q5 and 2012-2014 Audi TT vehicles) or fractured pistons (for Audi A3 and 2016-2017 Audi TT vehicles) within nine years or 90,000 miles of their in-service date can receive reimbursement for the repair costs they paid.
Class members whose repairs were completed by an authorized Audi dealer can receive a 75% refund for their repair costs. Settlement class members whose repairs were not completed by an authorized Audi dealer can claim up to $3,700 for excessive oil consumption or $9,000 for a fractured piston. A 75% refund will be applied to these totals, for a maximum excessive oil consumption payment of $2,775 and a maximum fractured piston payment of $6,750. Class members are limited to receiving compensation for only one repair per vehicle.
Class members can also receive compensation for engine damage repairs that they paid for out of pocket. Class members who took their vehicles to an authorized Audi dealer for repairs can receive up to 100% reimbursement, on the same sliding scale as the extended warranty, while class members who did not have repairs completed by an authorized Audi dealer can claim up to $12,000 at the same sliding percentage scale.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Feb. 28, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the Audi piston oil consumption settlement is scheduled for April 22, 2024.
In order to receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by April 15, 2024.

34 thoughts onAudi oil consumption class action settlement
I purchased a 2016 Audi Q5 2.0T in early 2024 with around 103,000 miles. After only 3,000 miles of driving, I noticed the vehicle was burning nearly a quart of oil every 500 miles. I immediately brought it to an authorized Audi dealership. They replaced the turbocharger, claiming it was the source of the oil consumption, costing $4,200 (covered mostly by my extended warranty, I paid $1,200 out of pocket).
Despite the replacement, the oil consumption problem continued with absolutely no improvement. I returned to the dealership multiple times, and they kept topping off the oil without conducting any definitive oil consumption test or piston diagnosis. After 100 miles from one visit, my vehicle threw an alternator error and required further service. The alternator was also found to be faulty — again, not due to my usage.
At this point, I’ve had several visits to Audi service with no real resolution. They never offered a borescope inspection to confirm piston ring blockage or damage, which is widely known as the root cause of excessive oil consumption in 2.0T engines from this era. I later found the class action website PistonSettlement.com, which clearly outlines that my vehicle is affected by the same defect — but because my VIN isn’t listed (possibly due to year range), I’m excluded from the settlement.
I feel Audi is deliberately ignoring a well-known engine design flaw. They charged me thousands without fixing the real issue, and now I’m stuck with a car I can’t reliably drive or sell. If anyone else is experiencing the same problem with 2015–2017 models, especially 2016 Q5s with the 2.0T engine, we should consider organizing another class action to expand the coverage. Audi must be held accountable.
I agree, I did not see or hear of this issue when I bought my 2015 Q5 on August 20, 2024. This oil consumption issue popped up two months after purchase when I could not unravel the deal or have the selling dealer repair it before I took delivery.
Most claims were successfully paid out in late 2024 at the same time that a number of claims were identified as being “deficient”. The deficient claims were then allowed up to 30 days to provide a satisfactory response. The administrator has now completed their processing of these 2024 deficient claims and is currently sending out the resolutions. Numerous claimants have been confirmed to having successfully satisfied their deficient claim and are being issued checks for their full claim amount. These current responses now being issued by the administrator regarding the 2024 deficient claims should be considered final.
I received another Denial Notice in the mail today. This is the second denial letter stating they didn’t receive any documents from me when they previously sent me a deficiency letter. This is such crap. I sent in all the documents they requested. They stated if I disagree to request an Attorney Review which I did but nothing will come of it. This is the second Audi Settlement that I have gone through this with. They never pay on them.
Has anyone been paid on this settlement or received any info or updates regarding payment?
I own 2014 Audi A4 and been experienced such an oil burned and now oil leak . I didn’t know anything about this settlement. Can someone help?
Anyone got paid on this settlement yet???
I received a deficiency letter as well stating I didn’t submit proof that I adhered to the maintainence schedule (which I did in my initial claim) and also had no proof that I was initially denied at the dealer for the repairs. I mailed in the documents they requested so how long will it take now to receive payment or another denial letter? Another 150 days?
I received the same notice and will be responding to the claim with an argument that the piston rings were not under warranty and I was not required to submit notification or proof to the delear since I was outside the 90,000 miles when I made my repair to my piston rings.
I got a notice of deficient claim. says no valid claimed repaid, maintenance schedule adherence. I submitted all the paperwork. anyone know how to talk to someone real and not the call center that will read me the script on the paper in front of me?
