UPDATE:
- The AmeriGas pre-filled propane tanks class action settlement was granted final approval March 30, 2021.
- Let Top Class Actions know when you receive a check in the comments section below or on our Facebook page.
Consumers who purchased AmeriGas or Blue Rhino pre-filled tanks may be eligible to claim up to $125 without proof of purchase as part of a $6.5 million settlement over the amount of propane in the tanks.
Those who are eligible to make a claim in this class action settlement include individuals who bought or exchanged one or more AmeriGas and/or Blue Rhino pre-filled propane tanks between Dec. 1, 2009, and Nov. 30, 2020.
Without proof of purchase, Class Members will be eligible for up to $2.50 per tank for up to 50 tanks, or $125. Class Members who provide proof of purchase are eligible for up to $5 per tank, with no limit on the number of tanks that can be claimed.
This class action settlement resolves claims that AmeriGas and Blue Rhino allegedly colluded together to lower the amount of propane in their pre-filled propane tanks from 17 pounds to 15 pounds without also reducing the price, resulting in inflated prices for propane customers.
While consumers who purchased either AmeriGas or Blue Rhino propane tanks may be affected by this settlement, it only resolves the claims made against AmeriGas; the Blue Rhino case is continuing in court.
AmeriGas has agreed to end the litigation with this settlement, but AmeriGas does not admit to any wrongdoing.
The settlement agreement established two Classes.
The Indirect Purchaser Settlement Class is made up of those who purchased AmeriGas or Blue Rhino propane tanks, other than a wholesale purchase directly from AmeriGas or Blue Rhino for resale, in Arizona, California, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah or West Virginia during the Class Period.
The Direct Purchaser Settlement Class is made up of consumers nationwide who purchased one of the propane tanks directly from AmeriGas or Blue Rhino via a vending machine at retailers or other locations, or paid one of the companies directly through a vending machine to exchange a previously purchased propane tank, other than a wholesale purchase intended for resale.
A fairness hearing is scheduled for March 31, 2021.
The deadline for filing a Claim Form, opting out or objecting to the settlement is March 8, 2021.

I spoke to the Settlement Administrator and they noted digital payments will start issuing between July 26 and July 30. Emails will issue to the address provided on the claim form and will include various payment options (Mastercard, Amazon, and maybe Target?). They said that payments should go out in waves and to be patient since my particular email reach my by July 30 at the latest.
Hopefully this helps with the timing.
thanks Pete… aren’t we glad that we picked the faster, more convenient option they said… wtf, we should choose check from now on, make them pay to print out all our checks
Ok what’s up with the option of PayPal then when the time comes then its not an option and you have to pick from Mastercard, Amazon, and maybe Target???? I want Paypal not the other options and thats what I picked and confirmed already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i wonder what the deal is with that. my friend got her paper check july 2nd. i picked digital because they usually do digital first, so why does it take almost a month later to send them out?
