AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. agreed to a class action settlement resolving allegations it improperly charged a convenience fee for online ticket purchases in New York state.

The AMC ticket fee settlement benefits U.S. consumers who paid a convenience fee to purchase a movie ticket or any other goods and services at any of AMC’s theaters located in New York state from AMC’s website or mobile application between Aug. 29, 2022, and Jan. 16, 2024.

The AMC fee class action lawsuit claims the movie theater failed to properly disclose the convenience fees charged when purchasing tickets to its movie theaters online. This failure to disclose allegedly violated New York’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Law.

AMC is a movie theater company with locations around the country.

AMC has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the fee class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the AMC ticket fee settlement, class members can receive either non-monetary relief or a $7 cash payment.

The non-monetary relief includes a free one-year membership to an elevated tier of AMC’s customer loyalty program called AMC Stubs Premiere, which provides various benefits such as waived convenience fees, priority lanes for concessions and box office, free birthday perks, discounted theater tickets every Tuesday, unlimited free large popcorn refills, free Wi-Fi, unlimited free size upgrades and other benefits. Additionally, those who already have an AMC Stubs Premiere membership will receive 12 additional months added to their account for free, and those enrolled in a higher AMC Stubs loyalty program will receive a free year of Premiere membership when their current membership level expires.

As part of the AMC fee settlement, the movie theater company acknowledged changes to the purchase flow for tickets to New York theaters on its website and agreed to continue to comply with the state’s ticket fees law going forward.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Nov. 8, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Nov. 21, 2024.

The claim form deadline is Nov. 8, 2024.
