UPDATE:
- Top Class Actions viewers reported this settlement paying out $78.92 as of Sept. 3, 2021.
- Congratulations to everyone who filed a claim and got paid.
Michigan residents who subscribed to Field & Stream, Working Mother, Yachting and other magazines may be entitled to benefits from a $2.15 million class action settlement.
Class Members include Michigan residents who subscribed to Bonnier Corporation publications, including Boating, Cruising World, Field & Stream, Flying, Marlin, Outdoor Life, Popular Science, Sailing World, Saltwater Sportsman, Saveur, Scuba Diving, Sport Diver, Sport Fishing, Wakeboarding, Waterski, Working Mother, and Yachting magazines. The subscriptions must have occurred between July 28, 2010 and June 25, 2019.
A class action lawsuit claimed that Bonnier collected and sold private information about its magazine subscribers in violation of the state’s Video Rental Privacy Act.
According to the Field & Stream magazine class action, Michigan residents are afforded additional privacy rights when it comes to their book, film, and subscription preferences under state law.
Plaintiffs claimed that Bonnier compiles a database of subscribers’ names, addresses, and subscribing history without the consent or even notice to Michigan subscribers.
The Field & Stream class action lawsuit also accused Bonnier of profiting from the collection and sale of subscriber information — denying the plaintiff and other Michigan subscribers of the full value of their magazine subscriptions.
Bonnier did not admit any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $2.15 million to settle the Michigan Field & Stream, Working Mother magazines class action lawsuit.
In addition, Bonnier has agreed to change their business practices, allowing subscribers to opt out of the disclosure of their personal information.
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Class Members will be able to receive between $43 and $86. To receive a cash payment, Class Members must submit a Claim Form online or via mail.
Class Members may also be able to obtain a code for a free year-long subscription. No Claim Form is necessary for Class Members who want a free subscription.
The deadline to opt out of or object to the Michigan Field & Stream, Working Mother magazines class action settlement is Aug. 26, 2019.
