The New York Attorney General recently secured $62.5 million in bill credits through a settlement with Spectrum, resolving allegations of substandard internet services.
The settlement will benefit New York Spectrum subscribers who paid for internet and/or cable through the company.
The Office of the Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Spectrum-Time Warner in February 2017, claiming that the internet provider failed to fulfill its promises regarding internet speeds.
The internet speed lawsuit claimed that Spectrum-Time Warner knowingly promised higher internet speeds than it was capable of providing and defrauded consumers by charging a higher price for speeds that were not possible.
In December 2018, the Office of the Attorney General announced that it had reached a $174.2 million settlement with both Spectrum and Charter, another internet provider accused of similar fraud.
“Today, New Yorkers will start to receive the tens of millions of dollars and additional services owed to them due to the company’s failure to provide quality services to its customers,” said Attorney General Letitia James in a statement. “In issuing the largest-ever consumer payout by an internet service provider, my office is proud to set a higher standard for the way that internet providers accurately market services.”
The Spectrum settlement will provide premium services to Spectrum subscribers at no additional cost. The exact details of these premium services are detailed in the “Potential Award” section below.
To receive the no charge premium service benefits from the settlement, consumers need to contact Spectrum by May 30, 2019.
Additionally, certain subscribers may be eligible for $75 or more in bill credits based on the modem or router they leased and the plan that they subscribed to.
