The Hain Celestial Group and JASON Natural Products Inc. have agreed to pay $1.1 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging they falsely advertised that some of their personal care products did not contain the chemical sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS.
If you purchased certain JASON products between Aug. 17, 2011 and June 2, 2017, you may be entitled to payment from the JASON class action settlement.
The JASON products covered by the class action settlement include:
- JASON Natural Product Long & Strong Jojoba Pure Natural Shampoo
- JASON Volumizing Lavender Shampoo
- JASON Normalizing Tea Tree Treatment Shampoo
- JASON Dandruff Relief 2 in 1 Treatment Shampoo & Conditioner
- JASON Smoothing Coconut Body Wash
Plaintiff Lori D. Gordon initially filed the JASON class action lawsuit in New York federal court on Aug. 17, 2016.
According to the Hain Celestial class action lawsuit, some JASON products feature a prominent label informing consumers that they contain “NO Parabens, SLS, Petrolatum, Artificial Colors or Phthalates.”
SLS is a synthetic surfactant that is used in many cleaning and personal hygiene products. However, exposure to SLS can reportedly have adverse health effects. Short term exposure to SLS may cause irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract, while long-term exposure may cause dermatitis, the JASON class action lawsuit alleges.
The Wall Street Journal reported on March 10, 2016 that two independent laboratories it had commissioned to test Hain Celestial’s products for the presence of SLS found substantial amounts of the chemical. Hain disputed this finding, claiming it uses sodium coco sulfate, which it says is “plant-derived, meets our standard for gentleness, and creates a luxurious sudsy lather during use.”
According to the JASON class action lawsuit, many chemists agree that sodium coco sulfate is a blend of cleaning agents and is made up of about 50 percent SLS.
Gordon alleges the products named in the JASON class action lawsuit were all advertised as containing no SLS but that they included sodium coco sulfate as an ingredient.
The defendants deny any wrongdoing and stand by their products. However, they have agreed to settle the JASON class action lawsuit to avoid the cost and risk of trial. The JASON class action settlement was preliminarily approved on May 5, 2017.
Class Members who would like to opt out of or object to the JASON settlement must do so no later than Aug. 14, 2017.
