Patreon agreed to pay $7.25 million to resolve claims that the company disclosed users’ identities and video-viewing preferences without consent in violation of federal laws.
The Patreon settlement includes individuals who, between April 1, 2016, and Sept. 23, 2024, requested or obtained video content on the Patreon website at a time when they had both a Facebook account and a Patreon account.
The class action lawsuit claims Patreon used a Meta Pixel on their website to disclose users’ identities and video-viewing preferences to Facebook without consent. Plaintiffs in the case argue that this illegal information sharing violated the federal Video Privacy Protection Act.
Patreon is a subscription-based platform that allows artists and creators to share exclusive work with their fans.
Patreon hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $7.25 million to resolve the VPPA class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Patreon settlement, class members can receive a pro rata portion of the settlement fund. Based on claims rates in similar cases, eligible class members may receive $35-$175 each. However, exact payments may vary depending on class member participation rates and other factors.
In addition to providing monetary settlement benefits, Patreon agreed not to operate the Meta Pixel on any web page on the Patreon website that includes video content unless certain conditions are met to satisfy VPPA requirements.
The exclusion and objection deadline is Jan. 1, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the Patreon settlement is scheduled for Feb. 5, 2025.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 1, 2025.
