A $4 million Southern Regional Jail class action settlement resolves claims that inmates at the West Virginia facility were subjected to inhumane treatment.
The Southern Regional Jail settlement benefits individuals who were inmates at Southern Regional Jail for more than two days between Sept. 22, 2020, and July 19, 2024.
Plaintiffs in the inmate mistreatment settlement claim the jail was overcrowded and had faulty plumbing, unsanitary living conditions, inadequate nutrition, inadequate bedding or hygiene items and improper disciplinary measures, all of which allegedly contributed to a lack of prisoner safety.
According to the class action lawsuit, this mistreatment and neglect of detainees violated the 8th and 14th Amendments of the Constitution.
Southern Regional Jail is a correctional facility located in Raleigh County, West Virginia, that serves seven counties in the area.
Defendants in the class action lawsuit, many of whom are government agencies and employees, haven’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $4 million to resolve the case. According to the settlement website, this is the maximum amount covered by the State of West Virginia’s insurance policies.
Under the terms of the Southern Regional Jail settlement, class members can receive a share of the net settlement fund. Payments from the $4 million settlement fund are estimated to range between $150 and $500, depending on the total number of claims filed and the amount of time spent at the Southern Regional Jail, though actual payments may be higher or lower.
The exclusion and objection deadline was Sept. 17, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the inmate mistreatment settlement was scheduled for Oct. 25, 2024.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a claim form online or by mail by Nov. 11, 2024.

Need help with an inmate that was assulted by federal staff in west virginia
The assult was from Lt., case manager and officers. Inmate file a law sue but needs help from attorney.
I was put into southwestern regional for missing court for unpaid traffic tickets. I was in there for 10 days in”dry” cell. Inhumane was an understatement I was locked down 24 hours a day in a single person cell with 2 others in there with me who slept on the floor. On the last day one of the guys in there got fetynyl on my skin and I almost died. The guard came and treated me like I willingly was doing drugs and treated me with force and aggression. Actually causing unreported injury.
I was in srj for a unpaid old fines and I was treated like a dog I got jumped in the pod when we was supposed to be locked down 23 out of 24 hours all that happened from that was I got moved to a different pod we was 4 female to a one man cell we had to sleep in The floor on a Mat and we almost never got to get out of that little cell for a hour the worst part of the srj experience was the Bluefield judge told the head c.o that I was to be released once my bond was paid but instead of doing what they was told to do they held me a week longer after the bond was paid my family literally have to call the judge in Mercer County had to call the srj jail and make them let me out I’m not a failon nor do I have a bad regret I’ve never been in trouble in my life except for then my Id they give you in jail has the number of time I’ve been in jail and it was the number one I was done very wrong in that place and I deserve way more the 500 hell I think the hell I went through in that jail I should own srj I would really appreciate a call from someone handling this lawsuit asap 3043206264
Srj lawsuit should have settled for more because the conditions were so inhumane
