Settlements have been reached in a massive class action lawsuit accusing certain automotive parts manufacturers of engaging in a widespread price-fixing scheme.
The auto parts price-fixing class action lawsuits involve consumers and businesses who purchased or leased qualifying new vehicles or who indirectly purchased qualifying replacement parts from the defendants.
The plaintiffs assert that they paid more than they should have for their vehicles and/or replacement parts.
There are dozens of auto parts that are covered in this litigation, including but not limited to air conditioning systems, alternators, automotive bearings, wire harness systems, electric powered steering assemblies, fuel injection systems, heater control panels, instrument panel clusters, inverters, motor generators, occupant safety restraint systems, power window motors and switches, radiators, spark plugs, starters, and window wiper systems.
There are currently two rounds of settlements that have been reached with defendants. The court has granted final approval of settlements with the following defendants “Round 1 Settlements”:
- Autoliv Inc., Autoliv ASP Inc., Autoliv B.V. & Co. KG, Autoliv Safety Technology Inc., and Autoliv Japan Ltd.
- Fujikura Ltd. and Fujikura Automotive America LLC
- Hitachi Automotive Systems Ltd.
- Kyungshin-Lear Sales and Engineering LLC
- Lear Corporation
- Nippon Seiki Co. Ltd., N.S. International Ltd. and New Sabina Industries Inc.
- Panasonic Corporation and Panasonic Corporation of North America
- Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd., Sumitomo Wiring Systems Ltd., Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems Inc., and Sumitomo Wiring Systems (U.S.A.) Inc.
- RAD Co. Ltd and T.RAD North America Inc.
- TRW Deutschland Holding GmbH and TRW Automotive Holdings Corporation
- Yazaki and Yazaki North America Inc.
The Round 1 Settlements are currently being appealed and therefore have not been finalized.
A second group of settlements “Round 2 Settlements” have been reached but they have not yet received final approval by the court. The defendants involved in the Round 2 Settlements include:

- Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd. and American Furukawa Inc.
- S. Electech Inc., G.S. Wiring Systems Inc., and G.S.W. Manufacturing Inc.
- LEONI Wiring Systems Inc. and Leonische Holding Inc.
- Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric US Holdings Inc., and Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America Inc.
- NSK Ltd., NSK Americas Inc., NSK Steering Systems Co. Ltd., and NSK Steering Systems America Inc.
- Omron Automotive Electronics Co. Ltd.
- Schaeffler Group USA Inc.
- Sumitomo Riko Co. Ltd. and DTR Industries Inc.
- Tokai Rika Co. Ltd. and TRAM Inc. d/b/a Tokai Rika U.S.A. Inc.
- Valeo Japan Co. Ltd. on behalf of itself and Valeo Inc., Valeo Electrical Systems Inc. and Valeo Climate Control Corp.
Numerous defendants have not yet settled the auto parts litigation, and there is no guarantee that they will settle in the future. Trial dates have not yet been set. A list of the non-settling defendants is available here.
UPDATE: On June 15, 2017, Koito announced it would pay $22.99 million to settle the claims against them. On June 20, 2017, Diamond Electric reached a $5.396 million settlement with end-payors. In total, the automotive parts price-fixing class action settlement is now more than $715 million.
UPDATE 2: On July 10, 2017, the court granted the Round 2 Settlements final approval. Top Class Actions will continue to provide updates as we learn more.
UPDATE 3: On Oct. 2, 2017, Mitsuba agreed to a $72 million settlement resolving claims that they conspired to fix prices on automotive parts.
UPDATE 4: On Feb. 27, 2018, a federal judge preliminarily approved a Calsonic $11M class action settlement, bringing the total value of settlements in the auto parts multidistrict litigation to more than $1 billion.
UPDATE 5: October 2019, a fourth round of payouts is now available as part of a massive $1.2 billion auto parts price-fixing class action settlement.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members of the Round 1 and Round 2 Settlements generally include anyone who, from 1996 to 2016, bought or leased a qualifying new vehicle in the United States or paid to replace one or more qualifying vehicle parts.

Monetary payments will only be available to persons who purchased or leased a vehicle or auto part while residing in (or entities having the principal place of business located in) the District Columbia or one of the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Proof of Purchase
Claimants must provide documentation about their purchase or lease. Failure to provide required documentation may result in the denial of your claim.
Claim Form Deadline
A Claim Form deadline has not yet been set. However, those Class Members who want to object to the settlement or be excluded from its terms must do so no later than Mar. 16, 2017. Top Class Actions will update this page as soon as the claim filing deadline is established.
