Webster University agreed to a $250,000 class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it overcharged students for fees during campus closures in the spring 2020 semester due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Webster University settlement benefits full-time, in-person Webster University students charged a student activity fee, housing activity fee or parking fee during the spring 2020 semester.

The settlement also benefits Missouri Webster University students who had a meal plan balance exceeding $1,029 as of March 27, 2020.

According to the COVID tuition class action lawsuit, Webster University failed to reimburse students for certain in-person fees for the spring 2020 semester. The university closed its campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic but allegedly failed to refund students for the Webster University fees they paid for in-person activities, parking and other on-campus expenses.

Webster University is a private university in Webster Groves, Missouri.

Webster University hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to the $250,000 class action settlement to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the Webster University settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the fees they paid during the spring 2020 semester.

The settlement includes a fee class fund of $168,500 and a meal plan class fund of $81,500, both of which will fund proportional payments to class members. Payments will vary depending on the class member’s final meal plan balance or the fees they paid. Exact payment estimates are not available.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Jan. 16, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the Webster University fees settlement is scheduled for Feb. 15, 2025.

No claim form is required to benefit from the settlement. Class members who do not exclude themselves will automatically receive settlement benefits.
