TransUnion agreed to a $23 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to properly investigate credit report disputes.
The TransUnion class action settlement benefits consumers who received a “502 Letter” from TransUnion in response to a written dispute of an inquiry between Dec. 5, 2016, and Jan. 31, 2025. There are around 485,000 class members.
Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit accused TransUnion of failing to properly investigate credit report disputes. According to the lawsuit, TransUnion failed to contact companies that requested credit reports and failed to remove disputed “hard inquiries” from consumer credit reports.
TransUnion is one of the largest credit reporting agencies in the United States.
TransUnion has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $23 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve the allegations.
Under the terms of the TransUnion class action settlement, class members can receive a cash payment. All class members will receive a minimum payment of $20 to $30 without the need to file a claim.
Class members who experienced certain harms as a result of TransUnion’s alleged violation of the law can file a claim for a higher payment. These payments will be calculated based on how many valid claims are received and the payout could be up to $160.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is June 24, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the TransUnion class action settlement is scheduled for July 21, 2025.
No claim form is required to receive a settlement payment. However, class members who wish to receive a higher payment must submit a valid claim form by June 24, 2025.

Between an estimated $20 and $160.
