Canon class action settlement

Canon USA Inc. has agreed to pay $930,000 in order to settle a class action lawsuit over allegations that its inkjet printers contain a print head defect which makes them inoperable.

Plaintiffs Sarah Barrett, Michael Robertson and Marcus Ho filed a joint consolidated Canon inkjet printer class action lawsuit in September 2014. The plaintiffs allege the printers suffer from a print head defect that causes them to display the following error message on the display panel of the printers: “UO52 — Print Head Error.”

According to the defective printer class action lawsuit, the problem typically occurs once the one-year warranty has expired so Canon refuses to repair or replace the printer for free. However, the plaintiffs allege that repairing the defect costs more than just buying a new printer. The plaintiffs claim that had they known about the defect, they would not have purchased a Canon inkjet printer.

Canon continues to deny that there is any defect in the printers or that the plaintiffs have a legitimate legal claim against them. However, the company agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the expense and uncertainty of continued litigation. The Canon printer defect class action lawsuit was preliminarily approved on June 24, 2015.

  1. Trisha says:

I haven’t received anything but the notice and that my claim was accepted. I see some people has been paid.

  2. Andrew L says:

Canon Australia have simply ignored this issue. When a consumer reports a U052 Wrong Printhead Error, Canon Australia state the printer is out of warranty, or that the error may not actually be related to the printhead! Next purchase I make will be either HP, Epson or other printer supplier. Avoid Canon!

  3. Scott S says:

Yes, I got the same postcard in the mail a few months ago, saying that I missed the deadline. I did not, but what recourse do I have? Scab attorneys. I, too, will STAY AWAY FROM CANON products.

  4. TMK says:

I got my $50 check in the mail a couple days ago (issued 6/15/16 from Huntington Bank on behalf of Canon Inkjet Printer Settlement). I was starting to wonder if anything would ever show up… I filed my claim online the day before the deadline in December.

    1. Christina says:

I have a LEGIT issue with the printheads of both my i950 and Pro9000 Mark II printers. This led to MUCH ink consumption and Canon never did anything about it. They ignored my complaints and once gave me a set of new ink instead of fixing the problem. Then it led outside the warranty and they just said sorry too bad. So I was ALL over this class action lawsuit and filed way before that deadline. When I heard nothing, I contacted the lawyer and she said I have to re-do the claim (now AFTER the deadline) – something about Canon denying my claim or something. I have proof of receipts too. I bought one printer to replace another due to this very print head issue. Now I am completely ignored as if I never filed a claim and will NOT be receiving my check. VERY UPSET with Canon. WORST customer service. Very greedy company.

  5. E says:

I agree with NEVER BUY A CANON PRINTER!! All of the red tape involved in filing claim then never hearing anything. My printer has joined all of the other Canon pieces of junk in the electronics recycling.

  6. P says:

Why did the comment box add all those plus signs the first time? That wasn’t intended.

  7. P says:

The ATTORNEYS for this Class Action lawsuit (In re: Canon Inkjet Printer Litigation, Case No. 2:14-cv-03235), and the COURT handling the suit, have done the WORST RECOVERY JOB and GREATEST INJUSTICE to the class that I have every seen!

I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICE of the class action lawsuit!
    How is that possible?
I am the owner of four Canon printers.
I was “registered” as an owner online at Canon.
I extensively read computer technology articles (especially about Apple products).
I never saw news about this class action.

Whatever “methods” of “giving notice” were utilized, they were substantially inadeqate and poorly initiated as evidenced by the numerous people who are still, even now, commenting about how they are just finding out about this past class action suit and their current status of now being excluded from being able to sue Canon or recover from Canon.

Canon should have been sued for a much larger amount.

I consider these attornies to have done a piss poor job of representing the Class, to have enriched themselves by quick, esay, shoddy work at the expense of the true Class, and to be leaches and parasites.

I consider the judge and court in the case to have been lazy, stupid, uninsightful, and non-caring of the true Class and the ture extent of damage by Canon to society.

    The attorneys were:
    William B. Federman
    FEDERMAN & SHERWOOD
    and
    Benjamin F. Johns
    CHIMICLES & TIKELLIS LLP
(Remember them….and do not use them ever.)

The court was the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
I don’t know who the Judge was.

CANON has clearly shown their true set of values. They will not stand behind their products. They will not fix their mistakes. They will take customers money and “run”. They have no honor. Don’t expect anything different from them.

At this point, there is no recourse for justice, other than to NEVER BUY CANON PRODUCTS ever again.
That is what I will do!
That is what I encourage everyone to do — NEVER BUY CANON PRODUCTS ever again!
