Consumers who purchased certain Samsung plasma TV models may be eligible to benefit from a Samsung class action lawsuit settlement resolving claims the models’ plasma display panel is defective.
The Class includes any California resident who owns a Samsung plasma TV model PN51F5500, PN51F5300, or PN51F5350 that exhibits a “line” issue that requires a replacement plasma display panel assembly.
The “line issue” refers to red lines allegedly appearing on the Samsung plasma TV’s display, according to a class action lawsuit.
The plaintiff had alleged Samsung failed to make replacement plasma display panel assemblies for the affected TV models available to authorized service centers in California, which injured consumers.
Samsung has denied all allegations of wrongdoing but has agreed to the settlement in order to avoid the complications and cost of continuing litigation.
A judge rejected a previous proposed settlement in the case, saying it didn’t sufficiently compensate consumers who purchased the allegedly defective TV models.
Samsung manufactures a variety of home, business, and personal electronics, including cellphones, televisions, kitchen and laundry appliances, and medical equipment.
Samsung Plasma TV Settlement Benefits
Under the terms of the settlement, Samsung Electronics America will maintain the in-stock status of the panel assemblies needed to repair the affected models on the relevant Samsung database system so any California authorized service center can confirm the parts are available.
The company also will provide the replacement plasma display panel assembly for purchase by the Class Member. If the company does not provide the replacement assembly, the Class Member may exchange their affected Samsung plasma TV for an alternative flat-panel display TV of similar size and with similar features or seek a refund the estimated purchase price of the affected TV.
Samsung may decide to make the replacement plasma display panel assembly available for purchase by the Class Member. If the company declines to do so, the Class Member may choose either the exchange or the refund.
Class Members are not required to file a claim form in the Samsung plasma TV settlement.
In order to benefit from the settlement, Class Members must contact an authorized service center to confirm the affected TV indeed has the line issue and requires a replacement plasma display panel assembly.
A fairness hearing in the Samsung class action lawsuit settlement was held in March 2020.
The deadline to object to the settlement has passed.
The deadline to seek relief under the settlement by contacting an authorized service center is Nov. 30, 2021.
